Beyond Family starts off with Nick (9). The only one Nick has is his dog, Kara. They are sleeping in an alley. One day, Nick has a substitute teacher (Ty). Ty offers to walk Nick home but Nick takes off before he can. Later, Ty sees Nick in a soup kitchen. Again, he offers to walk Nick home. Again, Nick takes off before he can. The next day, Ty follows Nick to the alley. That night he takes Nick and Kara into his home. What starts as friendship turns into much more. After Ty's heroic side is more known, more friends come into the lives of Nick and Ty.

EXT. – CALIFORNIA GRAVEYARD – 4 P.M.

NICK, 9, dressed in a black and blue stripped long sleeve shirt, black jeans, and black tennis shoes, and KARA, 2-year-old Collie, are standing facing a grave.

Nick looks at Kara.

NICK

Come on, girl.

Nick walks away from the grave with Kara following.

EXT. – CALIFORNIA ALLEY – AN HOUR LATER

Nick is sitting facing Kara.

NICK

Kara, you’re the only one that cares about me.

Nick starts to cry.

NICK

They loved Tyler. It’s not my fault he died.

NICK

(beat)

They always loved him more. I don’t think they ever cared about me. Tyler did but now he’s gone.

NICK

(beat)

Why wasn’t I enough for them?

Kara licks Nick’s face.

NICK

At least I have you.

Nick hugs Kara.

NICK

I love you, Kara.

EXT. – CALIFORIA ALLEY – 11 P.M.

Kara is lying facing the opening of the alley. Her eyes are open. Nick is lying with his head on Kara’s back. His eyes are closed. There is a bag next to Nick.

EXT. – SIDEWALK BY A CALIFORNIA PARK – NEXT DAY, 4 P.M.

Nick is watching kids play baseball. Kara is sitting next to Nick.

NICK

It must be nice to have friends.

Everyone at school is older than me.

Nick walks off with Kara following.
