Higgledy Piggledy - Simon Derrick
INTRODUCTION
Geraldine Higgledy was a very demanding princess who lived with her parents in a peculiar pink palace in the Kingdom of Collywobble. Princess Geraldine loved listening to bedtime stories, but she was bored of listening to the same old stories about precious princesses in pink dresses falling in love with perfect princes in pretty palaces. She wanted something more exciting, and so she asked her father, the King of Collywobble, to have her own bedtime story written for her by the finest writers in the land.
The king, whose name was Len, had promised to find his daughter the finest writers in the land and so discovered two very old and experienced writers called Barry and Steve who lived far away in a little bungalow in the sleepy town of Spindly End.
Every afternoon at about teatime, King Len would jump on his horse and gallop across the valley to call upon Barry and Steve.
It would take him about an hour to get there, and when he arrived, he would ask the writers for the latest chapter of their story, written especially for Princess Geraldine.
Here you are
said Barry, as he handed over the precious manuscript containing the first chapter of the special story to the king. It was wrapped in tartan lambswool and carefully tied together in a silk red bow.
Thank you
said the king, hastily shaking the writers by the hand. I'll be back tomorrow for chapter two
. And as quickly as he had arrived at the bungalow, he was gone. The king raced back through the kingdom on his horse so he could return to the peculiar pink palace just in time for Princess Geraldine's bedtime story.
Daddy!
beamed Princess Geraldine as he stumbled into her bedroom out of breath.
Do you have my story?
asked the princess, as she lay snuggled up in her bed.
Of course,
replied the king as he hurriedly unwrapped the manuscript and turned to page one.
