One of the biggest challenges faced by newbies to the world of citrus gardening is a lack of experience. Without the knowledge and know-how required, most beginner citrus fruit gardeners give up too soon, usually because their plants become unhappy or plagued by pests. Sometimes citrus fruit gardening can seem a lot more complicated than it is. Armed with the right advice and guidance, you can have a citrus fruit tree garden that doesn't only produce the sweet reward of quality fruit but absolutely thrives year in and year out.
Many avid gardeners discover that growing fruit trees directly in the ground presents various difficult to overcome complexities. For this reason, this entire book focuses on how to effectively (and most successfully) grow strong, sturdy citrus fruit trees in pots and containers which produce fruit bountifully.
By now you're probably wondering who I am and what makes me an authority on the subject of citrus container gardening. I will start by telling you that my name is Madison Peirce. I wrote this book to help avid gardeners and sustainable lifestyle enthusiasts grasp the concept, theories, and practical applications of growing fruit at home.
I am a devoted wife and mother, and to say that I am a fruit tree enthusiast would be an understatement. I live and breathe gardening, and one of my main focus areas is fruit trees. Whenever someone sees and samples the fruit from my garden, they marvel at just how much effort must have gone into nurturing and growing them.
While I admit that a considerable amount of heart and soul has gone into my garden, it was a process to get the basics down to a fine art. Ever since I equipped myself with practical gardening knowledge, the process has been more straightforward than expected and immensely rewarding. I share my wealth of citrus fruit tree gardening knowledge and experience with other passionate gardeners because I want like-minded people to derive the same joy I have from the process.
Growing up in sunny South Africa and spending most of my life living and traveling abroad, I have come to understand the challenges imposed on fruit trees in varying climates and just how rewarding and convenient container gardening can be. As a devoted mother and wife, I love the fact that we can enjoy fresh, healthy fruit plucked from our very own fruit trees – there's something so wholesome about that.
Enough about me though; let's focus our attention on citrus tree container gardening.
There are several crucial elements to growing and nurturing exceptional citrus trees. First and foremost, it's about getting to know what citrus trees like and dislike. Just like you and me, trees have their lifestyle preferences, so it stands to reason that if you give your trees what they want and need most, they will reward you with an abundance of fruit. It's important to note that you will reap the rewards of the time, effort, and care you put in. At this point, educating yourself is of the utmost importance.
Great care is taken to impart valuable information on how to successfully plant, nurture, grow, and eat from your potted citrus trees. You'll also learn techniques to overcome the challenges of growing fruit trees indoors and how to determine what is wrong with your tree when it's looking unwell or not producing as expected. Here you will learn simple and effective methods of rectifying problems and enriching the life of your plant. I also provide step-by-step guidance on how to transplant your thriving potted fruit trees into the garden. And finally, the fine art of Espalier growing is touched on.
We will thoroughly scrutinize the ins and outs of container gardening and tweak the process to tend to the needs of thriving fruit trees specifically. You can expect to explore all of the concepts below in the following chapters:
Choosing the right indoor fruit tree for you
Selecting a suitable pot or container
Planting techniques, including soil preparation
Tips for citrus fruit tree growing (watering, temperatures, pest control, etc.)
Instructions for fruit tree nurturing and maintenance
Telltale signs of problems and how to rectify them
Transitioning your growing tree to the garden
There's a lot more to citrus container gardening than simply popping a seedling into a pot and letting it grow. Because of this, learning various simple yet effective strategies for growing suitably sized, manageable, and high-yield fruit trees is the focus of this book.
There are several things you should acquire before you get started:
Gardening gloves (choose a pair that fits snugly)
Pruners
Watering can
Gardening boots/shoes (preferably waterproof) for when the transplanting takes place
Let's pull on our gardening gloves and get to work achieving what we set out to do: to successfully grow and nurture high-yield citrus fruit trees. Please join our community of avid gardeners for useful tips and information on all things gardening by scanning the QR code below.
