I've been dying to read this for a while now and my friend finally gave it to me in february when my original christmas present went on a 6 month back order.

I like Cassie and Vlad a lot. I'm hoping over time that they will grow and change although I've heard from my friend that they don't. Cassie is kick ass but she still has fears about fitting in that make her accessible. Vlad is sweet and weird and I just like that.

I love the slasher concept although I don't think reading it before bed was the wisest decision. Hack/Slash Evil Ernie was probably one of my favorites along with Comic Book Carnage.

This mash-up of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with horror/slasher movies works pretty well, without trying to mine terribly new ground. I especially like the relationship between the two main characters. Despite clearly caring about one another, they're both obviously terrified and suspicious that their relationship has more to do with the fact each is unable to find anyone else.

The cinematic influences are obvious, but well done, with an interesting cast of villains. My only complaints have to do with the artwork, which is wildly uneven, particularly in the portrayal of Cassie, who, despite having a backstory dependent on having grown up as a plain child, is now just a standard sexy comic heroine. I hate to complain, as the cheesecake covers featuring a scantily-clad Cassie played a part in my having picked up the comic in the first place, but I do wish that the artists weren't so eager to turn her into just another sexpot.

Oof. This was a hard one to finish. The characterizations were paper-thin at best, the dialog was poor and repetitive, and I can't even say that the art was particularly interesting (because it certainly wasn't good-looking). Really, it read like a series of in-jokes done for friends, which becomes tedious when there are this many pages. The only bright light in here is the Evil Ernie crossover, which has both competent and interesting art and at least an attempt at characterization.

Hack and Slash is a purely fun graphic novel mixing classic horror flick antics with all the cheese one would expect. This novel is a collection of stories featuring Cassandra Hack and her compatriot Vlad as the hunt down various undead Slashers rampaging throughout the country. Vlad on the other hand is the lovable giant and muscle behind the duo with all his own baggage. Together they make one hell of team destroying all the things that go bump in the night. These stories are meant to fun stories of no real consequence, much like the slasher flicks they emulate. Some of the panels can be a bit tasteless and Cassandra is always scantly clad in what could be called “goth” wear, and sometimes less especially in the mist of battle, which is too bad for otherwise a strong portal of a female heroine. It's not a classic but I was entertained.
