The Game
A Story of 4 Cousins
By Linda NMI Joy
Hank parked his old car on the side of The Whiskey Keg and just sat there for a few moments, soaking in the joy he felt, being home again, even if this visit wasn't very long. He had left Chicago at noon on Wednesday, and drove straight through, arriving at his folks' house in Columbus in the wee hours of the night. Dad had let him in, and he had zonked out in the guest room for a good chunk of Christmas Eve Day. Then a mad dash wrapping presents for his siblings, and putting them under the tree.
Then it was Christmas Day. It had been good to have his siblings come over to share the holiday meal and news about their lives. Helen was large with her second child, Edward and his wife announced they were expecting, and Gayle was having too much fun dating a number of young men to settle down with just one.
Hank had even—finally—told the family about Wanda.
Today, he had driven another hour to reach Belgrade, where he sat and played cards with Gram all afternoon, jaw jacking with her and anybody else who showed up. He had thought the rest of the infamous '4 cousins' might have shown up to spend some time with them, but it hadn't turned out that way. Gram said Bob was probably working as a bartender at the Whiskey Keg, and if Chuck had any jobs lined up, he was doing them. Since Lyle wouldn't be working today, he was probably off somewhere, drinking.
It might have been any other trip back home. Hank had gone away to finish up his college degree, and it seemed like all the cousins had gone off to their own
