The Church Dance - Jasmine Flowers

    CHAPTER 1

Mary Richards stared at the stack of books she had to assess, and she wanted to cry. She moved her glasses closer to her nose and sipped coffee from a ‘LOVE MY CAT’ mug that she picked from a yard sale. She moved closer to the desk, and before she marked one of her pupil’s books, she was informed by a student that she was called into the principal’s office.

Mary sighed. What did I do wrong this time? She muttered under her breath. She adjusted her purple skirt and walked over to the principal’s office.

Mrs. Carter was known to be mean and feisty, unlike Mary who was mousy and nerdy. She was completely conservative which greatly enraged Mrs. Carter.

    Have a seat Mary.

Mary sat. She wondered what Mrs. Carter would tell her this time. She had received a lot of complaints from Mrs. Carter, and a part of her felt that Mrs. Carter was jealous of her, but she always wondered why. Mary felt very much unaccomplished to make anyone jealous of her.

How many times have I told you not to dress so shabby? You dress worse than America Ferrera in ‘Ugly Betty.' Mrs. Carter loathed how Mary dressed and acted. We are in the twentieth century. How many times will you dress like we are in the fifties? You need to change your wardrobe. I guess that is why you are still unmarried.

Mary knew that she was an ‘old maid, ’ but she did not like it when people reminded her that she was thirty-six and still unmarried. She had no family of her own, and the only children she had were her two cats Francis and Nancy who clearly were not in love because she had thought that she would be a grandmother and have several kittens loitering about the house.

Mrs. Carter, I do not know what I did to you for you to hate me so much, but I think you can do us all a favor and fire me. Mary was exhausted by how Mrs. Carter bruised her self-esteem. She would rather be home and jobless than in a school where the principal did not
