About the Author
THE WEATHER IN Cape Town, Africa, was sunny the day before, but when the man arrived at the airport, it was raining. Clouds were opaque in the dark, early morning sky, and thunder roared over the dead silence. Most of the planes occupied the aprons and ramps, leaving the runways and taxi lanes empty.
The man walked across the tarmac as the rain beat upon his charcoal-colored, wide-brimmed fedora and dripped down his long, buttoned peacoat before landing on his dark slacks. Covering his face was a black, wooden kabuki mask with red and white stripes running across it. In his hand was a wooden staff with a green gem at the tip. He arrived at a storage hangar and found the two front sliding doors shut. The man pointed his staff at the doors. The green gem illuminated, and the doors slid apart.
Two planes and hundreds of storage crates filled the dimly lit space. The man strolled inside and looked to his left, then his right. He slowly swiveled his head back to the left before looking ahead and raising his staff with one hand. The gem changed colors and shined, filling the hangar with a scarlet red hue. Knocking rang from the right. The man looked in the direction and noticed a small crate bouncing with a crimson glow around it. The red tint disappeared as he lowered his staff and walked toward the hopping crate. When he was two feet away from it, a loud voice called from behind him.
Airport security, raise your hands.
The man turned to find a security guard with his pistol trained on him.
The guard flinched at the sight of the man in the kabuki mask. I-I won’t ask you again, raise your hands!
he repeated.
The man stared at the guard, then uttered one word. Mnyama.
At that, a white falcon swooped into the hangar, knocking the security guard off balance before perching on the shoulder of the man in the kabuki mask.
Another guard entered the hangar and aimed his rifle at the man. Drop the stick and raise your hands!
he said, sidestepping toward his partner. You okay?
Yeah,
the first guard replied, pointing his pistol at the man with the staff.
Final warning! Drop the stick!
The man pointed
