In the high passes of the Rocky Mountains, the power of a winter snowstorm can completely overwhelm almost any conceivable human effort. The people who live in the little towns in those passes realize the futility of trying to fight some of the most violent weather anywhere, and simply wait out the storms indoors. So Diane, who worked as a waitress in the town's only diner, was hoping that the owner would call and tell her that she could go home. She was very tired that night.

She was surprised when a beat-up four-wheel drive pickup truck stopped in front of the diner. A man got out of the truck and entered the diner, and when he stopped to stomp the snow off his boots and she realized she had never seen him before, she was more than surprised, she was actually alarmed. To have a stranger suddenly appear in what was, temporarily, one of the most isolated places on Earth, was strange enough, but also she thought, for reasons she wouldn't really have been able to articulate, that the man looked dangerous. He sat down at a table in a corner, with his back to the wall, which made her think about old stories of the gunfighters and outlaws
