The Ride Home

TEAGAN SIGHED AS SHE stared out the bus window. It had been a long strange day.  Beside her, Melodie was trying hard to stay awake and had started to fall over slightly.

Wake up, Melodie, Teagan told her, we are almost home.

Teagan could make out the green Berry Lane Farm sign at the end of their driveway up ahead.  Melodie sat up, looked out the window, and then reached for her bookbag.

I’m tired, she said. She did not appreciate being woken up.

As the bus pulled up to the driveway, Teagan waved out the window at her father.  Beside him sat Flower and Dougal. Flower was their border collie puppy, and Dougal was their mum's border collie. 

Dougal yipped excitedly as they got off the bus. Flower scratched her ear and tooted.

Ewwww, why does she do that every time she sees us? Melodie asked.

She can’t contain her excitement. Daddy said, taking the girls backpacks.

Can't she let it out another way? That stinks. Melodie cried.

Daddy just chuckled and patted her on
