CHAPTER 1
Hasagan Town, Aragon
Twenty-three-year-old Mystery Artilla had already won ten local car races and two international racing tournaments. As a child, she was given the nickname Myst so when she became a professional car racer, she used the name Myst Artilla. Ever since her father, Jaime Artilla, gave her a ride in his Ferrari, she had fallen in love with fast cars that soon turned into fascination to racing tournaments. Her parents supported her hobby with the condition that she never neglected her studies.
Myst had a suspicion though that her parents supported her car racing so she wouldn’t become like other young girls who were more interested in boys and having boyfriends. Her parents clearly wanted her attention focused on cars and racing rather than having romantic relationships.
When Myst discovered that she could beat the crap out of boys and men in racing competitions, her standards for a boyfriend rose significantly. She had no interest of having a boyfriend who wouldn’t be able to measure up to her achievements and abilities. Why would she want a weak and pitiful man without talent? She would never settle for a man who was way beneath her talent, courage and intelligence. If she never found a man worthy of her, she wouldn’t mind growing old alone.
One year ago, Myst met Sigfried Torrez, and he easily met and surpassed all her standards! But by that time, she had already become one of the contenders to become the champion for the Artilla Family in the upcoming Aragon Tournament. Myst had to control herself and hide her true feelings from the man who managed to capture her heart.
Five months ago, she graduated from her Mechanical Engineering course. A position was already waiting for her in one of their family’s transportation business. They owned hundreds of provincial buses that traversed all over the Philippines. Her father, Jaime Artilla, had grander plans than their ancestors. He, with the support of their patriarch, Jaden Artilla, was currently negotiating with the government to build a railway that would cover all points of Luzon island. The trains his father was planning to run on those railways were not the regular slow trains seen today. It would be similar to the popular bullet trains of Japan so people from the northern and southern part of Luzon could quickly travel to Metro Manila.
Once his father’s plan came into fruition, the starting line for the train would be in Hasagan Town, their hometown in Aragon Province. His father wanted to put the name of the Artilla Family in the history books to be the first one to build the fastest, most efficient, safest and longest railway in the Philippines! Of course, those bullet trains would carry the name of the Artilla Clan and their family symbol. The Artilla Clan’s symbol, a red shield with the image of a red ant, would be etched on every bullet train.
If their family were the ones ruling Aragon, this business venture would go much faster. Unfortunately, the Caballero Family still ruled Aragon. But that could change this year once the Aragon Tournament commenced.
Myst was one of the contenders the elders of the Artilla Family was considering to become their family’s champion for the Tournament. The decision of these elders was highly respected because they were former patriarchs and champions of the Artilla Family. Before the end of this week, the elders and their patriarch would announce who would become the champion of the Artilla Clan. Although Myst was excited with the prospect of becoming the champion for her family, she didn’t want to put too much hope on such a possibility. But if she was chosen... A smile crossed her face. She would make sure that this time, the Artilla Clan would become the rulers of Aragon. Their family would not only gain honor but a lot of benefits and advantages.
And once she had won, she would finally have time to focus on her love life. Sigfried’s dark smiling eyes that sometimes showed mischievousness flashed on her mind.
Her daydreams were suddenly interrupted when she heard the conversation coming from the two-way radio she had installed in her Porsche 956. Whenever she was in Aragon, she would often listen to the frequency being used by the police in Aragon to know what had been happening in the province. Myst quickly recognized one of the voices as belonging to Colonel Pasencio Caballero who was known by all as Chief. Technically, Chief Caballero’s position in the Aragon Police Force was director. Although he had the surname of a Caballero, his mother was an Artilla. Chief’s mother, Grandma Ason, was once Artilla’s champion who fought in the Aragon Tournament several decades ago. She lost. And as part of the penalty for losing to the Caballero champion, she had to give her first
