Answer By The Nature - Tharaka Mahesh

    Tsunami

Tsunami is a Japanese word meaning big port wave. When the low tide in the distant sea reaches the harbour, it rises above the port due to its narrow shape. This is what the Japanese call a tsunami.

According to the Tsunami website, tsunami waves are waves created by the vertical turbulence of an ocean current and the combination of several waves.

Factors influencing the occurrence of a tsunami

    Earthquakes on the ocean floor

    Landslides

Tsunami waves caused by volcanic eruptions

Meteor showers and large icebergs crashing into the ocean

    Tsunami forecast

There are often no warnings before a tsunami arrives. But tsunamis are usually caused by a water-related earthquake. A tsunami can occur if shallow water, high intensity, depth of water and sufficient water mass are complete. An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale could cause a tsunami that would inundate large areas of Japan, usually within 15 minutes.

The first tsunami wave to reach land is a valley (two-way) that exposes areas that are generally submerged by a clear decrease in coastal waters. This is a foretaste of a tsunami that will strike before the disaster is over. If a man on the beach suddenly sees the sea receding (along with many survivors reporting a sucking sound), the only chance for him to escape is to flee to a high place or climb to the top floor of a tall building.

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused no tsunami in the east, nor did the sea recede from Africa or other western coasts. The reason is the nature of that wave. It travelled below the dividing line on the east and above the dividing line on the west. Africa and other western coasts were hit by waves from the west.

Eighty percent of all tsunami tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean. But tsunamis can occur anywhere where there is a large body of water, such as inland lakes. These can be caused by landslides, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. According to the April 2008 issue of Geographical Magazine, the tsunami in the Indian Ocean was not the worst tsunami to hit the region. Ocean region of Madagascar, Singapore, Somalia and Western Australia. The tsunami killed at least 30,000 people the day after Christmas, leaving many unidentified and missing. According to unofficial reports, nearly one million people have died directly or indirectly from the tsunami.

    Historical information on tsunami activity

It is said to be the oldest building in the world 2500 years ago. It is said that during the Rama-Ravana war, the sea melted due to the melting of snow using heavy weapons. The Rajavali states that 470 fishing villages and 970 ports were destroyed due to the floods. The Mahavamsa states that the sea was flooded due to the curse that King Kelani Tissa killed a monk 2000 years ago. According to the Tsunami Internet, the tsunami waves in Scotland occurred in 500 BC. A sudden earthquake in the Atlantic Ocean caused the tsunami waves to form.

    Tsunami Warning and Prevention

A tsunami cannot be prevented or accurately predicted. This is difficult even if an earthquake of sufficient magnitude occurs in the right place. Oceanographers and seismologists analyse every earthquake and consider many other factors, thereby issuing a tsunami alert and analysing each earthquake and many other factors to determine whether a tsunami alert should be issued. But as a tsunami approaches, there are many warning signs, and methods have been devised to minimize the damage caused by the tsunami. The most
