WAVES OF CHANGE
The art of wave riding tunes us into the cyclical patterns of the planet – seasons and weather systems, swells and tides – that is essentially the earth’s natural pulse. And because of that we’re among the first to notice the changes first-hand, the proverbial canaries in the coal mine.
One thing’s for sure, ask any surfer and they’ll tell you the weather patterns are changing. Seasons just aren’t as ‘seasonal’ as they used to be. Saying that we remember the surf being better when we were younger may no longer just be due to selective memory, it really probably was.
And it’s all thanks to something called climate change, otherwise known as global warming.
Climate change has long since ceased to be a scientific curiosity. It is the major, overriding environmental issue of our time. By the year 2100, earth will be hotter than it’s been in three million years. Three million years ago, probably not one species that you’re familiar with today was alive.
