Wind gusts shook the aircraft. Thirty-foot (9-meter) waves and sea spray made it hard to see anything. But the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hurricane Hunters airplane kept flying. The plane dipped closer to the ocean’s surface than normal. It was October 2, 2015, and Hurricane Joaquin was pounding the Bahamas. And the SS El Faro, a United States cargo ship, was missing in the storm.
