    Sin City - Jennifer Mooney

    Chapter 1

W e need to get away for a while. How does Las Vegas sound for a long weekend?

I glanced at my best friend, Ariel, with a confused expression.

How am I supposed to get away? I have work, I shot back as she giggled.

You've been working so hard for the last few months since the breakup. I talked to Maddie, and she told me she'd give your four days off to get away with me! Ariel clapped her hands with her usual enthusiasm as I sighed.

I ran a boutique with Maddie after only being a salesperson for one year, taking over as co-owner after that. It was a lot of work to keep a popular shop going here in Carlsbad, and I worried about leaving Maddie for any period. Are you sure that she's okay with it? I asked, and Ariel nodded. I had gone through a rough breakup four months ago with my boyfriend of three years, Thad. He decided that he just didn't want to be in a relationship any longer, using the excuse of my working more hours than he did as a reason to end things. Perhaps Ariel was right. I needed some fun in my life.

Fine. what weekend is this happening? I asked as she gave me a huge grin.

"Your birthday in two weeks. I have the hotel reserved, and everything set up. You just need to find someone to watch Meadow. I glanced at my kitten as she sunned herself in the window, considering who I'd trust to take care of her. Meadow was the gift to me after the breakup, and though I worked a lot, she was always happy to see me when I arrived home.

I think that could work. I have some neighbors that pop in to take care of her if I'm working more than usual. I shrugged and ran a hand through my thick black hair. It was getting long, and I knew I needed a trim before we left town.

'Yay!! I am so excited to get away from here and see everything in Vegas!" Her blue eyes lit up, and I couldn't help but laugh at her enthusiasm.

So, where are we staying? I asked as I reached for my coffee on the bistro table in my cozy, one-bedroom apartment.

There's a brand-new hotel that looks incredible, and I booked us a room there. There are restaurants, a spa, a club and a few shops on the main level. It looks great there. Ariel pulled her blonde curls into a high ponytail before turning my laptop to face her. She warmed it up and logged into something before sliding the computer gently to me. I looked at the pictures, seeing the Spanish-style hotel and all the features that Ariel referred to.

    It was a lovely
