    Afterglow - Jennifer Mooney

    Chapter 1

I can't believe that you're finally here! Corinne exclaimed, opening her arms as I jumped into them. It's been forever, Fern.

I held my twin sister tightly, needing this moment more than I cared to admit.

Well, almost. Being apart from my twin left me unable to breathe some days, but we went to college in different states.

I visited her this time in Louisiana. We'd both graduated and had degrees in our perfect choices, hers being psychology and mine being art. The difference this time was that I didn't have college classes to return home to, and I also didn't have a return ticket to Chicago.

Let's get your things and head out of here. Are you hungry or anything? Corinne asked me as she took my hand to lead me to grab my luggage from the flight. I already heard the accent that she'd picked up over the last four years.

Eyes paused as we strode by, staying locked on us as Corinne chatted my ear off. I knew we were a striking pair, with our caramel-colored hair that hung in a mass of curls to our shoulders. Sometimes we'd attempted to look different over the years, but now was not one of them.

I listened to her, ignoring everyone around us as we went to watch the luggage roll past us on the belt. My two bags were bright purple and until I saw them come around, I would stay away as people jumped in to grab their bags, often dropping them.

When mine finally showed up, my sister and I each grabbed a bag before heading to the door that led outside. It's a little hot here right now, but my apartment has air conditioning. Don't worry, Corinne smiled as she led me to a Jeep as green as the grass on a spring day, which was a graduation present from my parents. I had a grey one back home in Chicago. We loaded the bags into the back and climbed into the vehicle.

I'm not troubled about that. You live just outside of the part of the city I want to see the most, Cori. I can't wait to explore things. I bucked myself in as she started the engine, backing out with a careful glance behind her.

Speaking of which, are you hungry? My sister drawled as I laughed at her. There are some great places that you haven't been to yet.

I could eat, I replied, and she squealed as she pulled onto the road leading away from the terminal.

We ended up going to a dive bar for lunch, eating burgers with fries as we caught up on life. It wasn't as though we didn't talk all the time but talking in person beat every phone call.

It especially rocked because I was here to stay this time. My art degree offered me the opportunity to live and work from everywhere, and I only went to school in Chicago because it was the best one out there. I also got in on a scholarship. I planned to stay here in Louisiana for a while, living with Corinne until it suited me to move on.

What do you want to do tonight? Corinne asked as I giggled, hopping back into the jeep.

I'm here for a long time. We can have a movie night for all I care. I smiled at her as she secured her hair into a messy bun. What about Andy? He doesn't want to see you tonight?

Andy was Corinne's boyfriend of two years, both handsome and sweet as could be. He adored my sister, and I didn't see them spending a lot of time apart simply because I was here.

He mentioned doing something all together if you were up to it. Dinner or whatever. Corinne smiled at the mention of her boyfriend, and I loved her happiness.

Well, that sounds good. I haven't seen him for a while either.

He's been wanting to take me to some seafood place for a couple of weeks now, so we could go there. It's still early, Corinne glanced at the clock on her dashboard as she let the car warm up. Noth that I'll order that, but I know that you two love that.

That sounds perfect, I agreed, leaning back to let the warm wind blow my hair through the cab, laughing as we drove down the street to her apartment.

Her place was located in an old craftsman's house that had been split up into three apartments.
