Randi McKinnon

My name is Randi McKinnon. I came to this country from Norway in 1959 and settled in Oregon. After working in the Food and Hospitality Service for 40 some odd years, I retired. Thinking retirement was bowing, I needed something new to hold my interest. I decided to take a correspondence course in the writing of children's books through The Institute of Children's Literature. Most of my stories are fiction as I embellish on stories told to me as a child. I had no playmates and made up my own games. Trolls, fairies, and the like were believed to be real, according to our grandparents. So remembering these, I have a lot to write about. Some of my sentence structures may not be quite correct as I sometimes mix my two languages together. Here's hoping I'll be forgiven! This is me in nutshell!

The Magic Stones - Randi McKinnon

    1

Swallow your food before you speak, said Molly with a grown-up voice.

She had finished her sandwich and Pete, trying to keep up, stuffed the rest of his sandwich in his mouth and tried to speak.

She remembered that he had done this very same thing many times before, so she knew just what to do and say.

Pete swallowed obediently and said, I asked if you were ready to continue on our journey?

I am, she answered as she stood up and brushed the grass and crumbs off her clothes.

The last of their lunch an apple, they left it in their backpacks for later in the day, when they wanted a snack.

They were on their way again .

Along the way they found a few berries to snack on.

Mmmm, wild strawberries sure taste good right off the plant, doesn’t it Pete?

Sure it does, he answered, licking the juice off his fingers.

Molly, do you think we will find the cave our fathers talked about? he asked as he took a breath, as he felt a little out of breath, because they were going uphill all the way.

She stopped to take a deep breath, because she felt a little out of breath herself but she didn’t want Pete to know and shaded her eyes with her hand against the sun as she said, Since our fathers said it’s up there, it must be true so let us go on.

They finally reached the top and the small plateau their fathers had mentioned where they stopped and looked out over the valley. The houses look so small, said Pete.

Molly wanted to sound grown-up as she said, Silly boy, don’t you know that it is because we are high above the valley and that make it seem much smaller.
