AS ABOVE SO BELOW… One of the fundamental philosophies of Astrology.

Chapter 1: Astrology History & Fundamentals

    History and Philosophy

Astrology is a fascinating system for self-discovery. We have been looking to the stars and celestial movements since the beginning of time, quite literally. Ancient cultures & civilizations knew of the power of planetary movements and transits in the skies. Many people even refer to the skies as the heavens. They recognize the influence of both heavenly, higher realm forces and earthly ones. As above so below…

Ancient Egyptians, for example, studied the stars as did the Chinese, Greeks, Indians, Africans, and Tribal cultures and communities. Our ancestors were perfectly aware of our interconnection with the universe above. Interconnectedness. Oneness. These are the basic principles of astrology, regardless of which system or approach you take. The planets and celestial bodies influence us- they affect us directly here on earth. Natural cycles are present in virtually all of life, and it’s no wonder that the females of our species have a naturally synchronized cycle to the moon. Periods are also known as ‘moon cycles!’

Our ancestors used the sky to determine the right times for crop harvest. They would sow, plant, reap, and care for their herbs, plants & crops based on the cycles of the planets. Today, the cycle of the moon is the main aspect of astrology most people are familiar with (in addition to sun/star signs, of course); but the principle is the same for all of the major planets in our solar system. Like the tiniest atom within our cells, our solar system looks like an atom (as above so below). The well-known saying, which came first, the chicken or the egg? applies too. Creation is perpetual, infinite, constant and interconnected. What occurs above us has profound implications in the physical realm.

And our other bodies are influenced & affected too. By bodies we’re referring to our mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and astral/energetic selves; the whole self. Oh yes, astrology is a holistic system of learning and self-discovery.

    So back to its history…

The study of the stars and planets and of the movements and natural cycles of each planet, in particular the moon, became an integrated way to learn about ourselves at key times. Ancient Egyptians had a deeply sophisticated system for self-discovery and spiritual growth. They utilized the tools and wisdom of astrological influences as and for a way of living. It wasn’t seen as an outside or external tool or the like, but it was instead fundamental to daily life. Seeing planetary cycles like this allowed them to feel more connected to the earth, and the stars above. In this respect, astrology can provide meaning. It creates internal shifts and helps to align you to your true self- your whole self, and a more holistic & encompassing reality simultaneously.

Many cultures even had Sun pyramids, or pyramids of the sun. Essentially, they would worship planets. Worship was done in a way that paid respect and reverence to the planets and celestial entities, without disconnecting oneself from their true power & potential. In other words, these people & cultures weren’t ignorant to self-alignment or self-empowered. Recognition of a spiritual energy, higher and subtle (astral, ethereal and energetic) planes and dimensions of being, and connection rooted in unity and universal truths, were present. The sun pyramids were created to enhance protection and connection, and to further serve as a reminder of our connection to the cosmos. Mesopotamia, Sumeria, Babylon and Aborignal Australia are names associated with the most ancient civilizations on earth, so this is something to research if you are interested in learning more about humanity’s oldest roots.

    Western Tropical Astrology

It’s important to know that there are different branches of astrology. This book focuses on Western Tropical Astrology. The other types are shared below.

    ● Vedic astrology (influenced by Hindu and Indian traditions)

    ● Chinese astrology

    ● Sidereal astrology (sometimes interchangeable with the Vedic approach)

Western Tropical Astrology uses a Geocentric view of the planets and sky. Geocentricity refers to the way we choose to view from Earth up, or the ground up, i.e. earth to sky. It denotes the distinct path of planetary movements (sun, moon, Venus etc.). It also relates to elliptical- the unique path of the Sun as it passes through each Zodiac sign.

The purpose of a geocentric perspective in Western astrology is primarily for natal charts. Natal charts are birth charts (we go into this in more detail later). In the Western/tropical system, the first season is Aries and the pattern remains the same: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. (Fire- earth- air- water.) In the Sidereal system, however, constellations are considered and this creates much change and often ambiguity or confusion. As a beginner to astrology it's, therefore, advised to become completely familiar with Western astrology first. (However, it's good to consider that the universe is forever changing, shifting & evolving… nothing is stagnant! Sidereal astrology takes note of these shifts & transitions.)

A few facts learned in Western tropical astrology: -

    ● It takes the Earth 25,800 years to complete a cycle; a swing of the North and South poles, which is called a Great Year.

    ● In addition to constellations, a Great Year divides into 12 cycles each lasting 2000 years. We call this an Age, i.e. we ’ re very soon leaving the age of Pisces, which has lasted for (roughly) 2000 years. This means that the Sun is in the constellation Pisces.

Vedic astrology, on the other hand, makes predictions. It uses the wisdom of the stars and planetary movements to create projections into the future. Western astrology is less able to do this, as the Western tropical system doesn’t take into account changes. Vedic (Sidereal) astrology is always changing with the times; astrologers stay up to date and consider fixed stars i.e. the new placements and positions. Western astrologers do have a general understanding, and they can certainly see into personality traits & characteristics, desires and needs, life path & passions, etc. But they are not predictive or adaptive (to the times or current time). In Western astrology, the ‘Zodiac’ refers to the belt or band of individual constellations which move through the Sun, Moon and other planets; things are very much fixed, i.e. a specific significance and meaning is attached to each constellation.

For the reason shared above there will always be some ambiguities and distortions. For example, you may have read somewhere that there are in fact 13-star signs, and the current system is wrong. We don’t explore this new system of astrology in Practical Astrology for Beginners and focus solely on the Western tropical, traditional, system.

The difference between Astrology and Astronomy?

Astronomy is the study of the planets and how they interact with each other, solely within space (and as individual entities). Astrology is the study of how these planets interact with each other, and with us on Earth. The astrological interaction is physiological, psychological/mental and emotional, physical, and spiritual… The planets and celestial bodies emit electromagnetic radiation and gases made up of hydrogen and helium. The study of this is called ‘Infrared Astronomy,’ the planets give off energy at wavelengths in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum (i.e., from about one micrometer to one millimeter).

    Benefits of learning Astrology

Astrology is a beautiful system for healing and self-development. It allows you to learn the wisdom of the stars through planetary movements, celestial bodies, and specific constellations. Each constellation (Aries- Pisces) has a unique frequency, which we translate to personality type, likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, motivations in love and career, life path and service/passions, and general vibe & character. Astrology provides a secure framework for personal growth, transformation & self-discovery.

Western astrology specifically emphasizes the psychological nature of individuals, so this naturally encompasses mental, emotional, physical and spiritual qualities & motivations. Sidereal or Vedic astrology focuses on predictions and adapting to the times, which allows new cycles and planetary positions to be considered- for a more accurate type of evaluation. (we mentioned this briefly earlier). Nevertheless, the importance and subsequent benefits of Western astrology shouldn’t be overlooked.

Recognizing the interconnected nature of life and self

Astrology is perfect if you wish to learn about the way celestial and planetary objects affect us directly on earth. Lots of people are still suspicious about astrology and its validity. ‘How can your star sign possibly determine your personality and character?’ Or statements such as, I don't believe in astrology… But, this cynicism comes down to a lack of knowledge. Self-awareness along with new recognition and self-realization is available, the more one starts to see the signs. Astrology is very similar to numerology in this sense, as numerology is intrinsically connected to the presence of numbers; how signs, messages, symbols, and cues in waking life (daily reality) provide direct insight into deeper, more subtle, spiritual and subconscious aspects.

Astrology will teach you to shift the way you see things. Interconnectedness is a metaphysical concept, but it is rooted in truth and physical reality. Planets up above influence us down below. Disconnection and separation are illusions. We can look to the apparently simple, yet very powerful reality of ‘periods.’ A woman’s period is also known as a moon cycle, and this portrays just how connected we are to the stars. She actually synchronizes her natural blood flow to the receptive, passive, yin (feminine) and watery-emotional lunar plant (the Moon).

When the Sun is out, we tend to feel happy, upbeat, positive and optimistic too. We may be inspired or be given a burst of life & vitality. Energy fills us, and we feel motivated to go after our dreams & goals, begin or develop a new passion project or hobby, or generally see things in a brighter way…. Well, this is due the energetic symbolism of the Sun. The Sun is positive, yang (fiery/fire), active, expressive and representative of willpower, life force, and vitality. It is therefore no wonder we feel a certain way when the Sun is out and shining brightly!

As we explore in the next chapter, it's not only the Moon and Sun that affect us so strongly. All of the planets, including a few other celestial bodies, like Chiron, influence us. The universe is a holographic & interconnected system and it is not only our planet (or our own bodies) that seek to achieve homeostasis.

Taking into consideration our connection to the Earth (our beautiful planet!) and the Skies/Heavens/Stars up above

As above so below is a concept you should become familiar with if you aren't already. Its roots are from Hermeticism; however, the philosophy has been embraced by many people, cultures, and places around the world- and from many different time periods. Ancient Egyptians, as you’re now aware, even had Sun temples to enhance their connection to the Sun. It is believed that Mayans and other civilizations had Moon temples as well. Greeks, Egyptians, and Sumerians certainly had dream temples intended for dreaming and connecting to the subconscious during sleep (which involves recognition of the power of the subtle energies of the Moon). Today, virtually everyone celebrates a birthday- or an earth day! The day one was born on earth. Numerologists and those who follow the system of numerology understand the significance of the numerological value of one’s birth date too.

Synchronicities can be determined throughout your journey with astrology. Perhaps repeat patterns in love, business or relationships keep coming up? Maybe there are unresolved wounds or past pain which still need to be healed? Is trauma, your shadows, flaws & follies holding you back; do you need to listen and pay attention to the signs to step into your full power, and follow your sense of destiny or life path? Astrology provides key insights into all of these areas, and so much more! The key is that it opens doorways to self-discovery, healing & growth. If a theme keeps playing on repeat, recurring to the point of pain, trauma, disappointed, misalignment (to your best life, strengths and gifts/talents), or regret and feelings of failure, or like your life hasn’t turned out the way you hoped; the wisdom and insight of astrology can help to realign you.

    A sense of grounding...

Astrology helps you feel connected to your body as well. The more in tune you become with your inner workings, psyche, subconscious desires, fears and passions, personality traits and both light and shadow aspects of self; the more you begin to become whole and integrated. Balance is attainable and with inner balance comes harmony. Mind, body & spirit; mental, emotional, physical and spiritual balance; generally feeling safe and secure, protected and comfortable in your physical vessel… these come with astrological wisdom and acceptance.

Being grounded is feeling connected to the internal and the external. Wisdom from astrology is rooted in the stars, yet it is equally within; inside the cells of your body. Consciousness is a fascinating thing… Astrology teaches that we have a natural affinity with the cosmos. The individual, planet earth, the universe and cosmos as a whole can be seen as a single organism. Each part is correlated and connected with another. Ultimately, this signifies that natural shifts & cycles of the planets and other celestial bodies will naturally affect us on earth. Each planet has a unique energy, specific characteristics and an ‘astral body.’ This astral energy affects us, it interacts with us.

    An interesting thought...

Many people compare life to music. Pythagoras, a well-known ancient Greek philosopher, introduced ‘the Harmony of the Spheres.’ This proposal was based on the principles of metaphysics. Mathematical relationships express qualities (tones) within numbers, shapes, sounds and visual angles. Pythagoras then expanded this to suggest that the pitch of a musical note is in proportion to the length of the string that produces it. Intervals between harmonious sound frequencies form simple numerical ratios, and in terms of harmony of the spheres; it is believed that the Sun, Moon and planets emit their own unique frequencies, or hum, based on their orbital revolution.

In other words, life on earth is affected by celestial sound waves and emissions of frequency tones. They may not be imperceptible to the human ear, but they are very real! This is why in astrology planetary orbits are often referred to as lower and/or higher octave. The current planetary ruling position of Pisces, the 12th and final sign (and the most evolved out of all 12 signs) is in Neptune; a higher octave of Pisces’ last ruler (ancient ruler: Jupiter, from an old cycle/Age).

Furthermore, Pythagoras went onto suggest that astronomy and music were deeply and intrinsically entwined, twinned studies if you will. Astronomy is for the eyes, music is for the ears, and the shared aspect is that they both require knowledge of numerical aspects & proportions.

The main areas of exploration (Self-discovery)

I personally like to call this the trilogy of astrological self-discovery (it’s not a technical name, but it resonates with me!). In truth, every planet is important and arguably equally significant. So, it’s not just your star sign, moon sign, rising or ascendant sign… but Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune & Pluto, which are useful and provide gems of wisdom and guidance. But, the star (sun), moon and rising are the three most people work with. You also have your North Node, South Node, Chiron, and various other Aspects, Angles and placements.

    Star Sign

Your star sign is your Sun sign and the main aspect used in astrology, in terms of self-discovery and learning. This is the constellation the sun was in at the time of birth. It represents itself in your Natal (birth) chart, and brings great learning and self-analysis.

The Sun sign relates to your willpower, passions, and self-identity. The Sun is a masculine and yang planet, and the center of our solar system. This signifies that all matters of ego, personality and the inner workings of your psyche will come into evaluation. ‘What makes you tick?’ ‘What is the core truth of your personality?’ ‘What are your likes and dislikes, strengths & weaknesses, and passions and soul yearnings?’

Your Sun sign is often called a Star sign because it corresponds with your most authentic self and character, the part of you that’s in the spotlight. Unlike the moon sign which relates to subconscious influences and yearnings, and ‘behind the scenes’ factors, emotions, feelings and subtle impressions; your Sun sign is not subtle. Your strengths and light will shine for all to see, just as your weakness and shadow will be made visible to those who know you. There is no escaping the key (core) parts of your Sun sign.

Ultimately, the Sun is a yang force; dominant, active, positive, light (i.e. qualities rooted in lightness, brightness), fiery, heavenly, and forceful/forward-thinking. Your key personality traits are determined by the position (placement) of the Sun at the time of your birth.

We explore Sun signs in detail in the second book to this series.

    Moon Sign

Your Moon sign is the placement of the moon at the time of birth. The moon’s energies and influences are ying in nature; receptive, negative, passive, magnetic, feminine, and dark (relating to darkness). The moon rules your subconscious- hidden desires, needs, passions and emotions. You have your own subconscious mind, which is personal factors and behind the scenes influences, and the collective subconscious. The collective can be seen as collective themes that run throughout the human psyche and consciousness.

Everything connected to emotions, family, home and roots can be discovered through your lunar placement (moon sign). It is usually a nurturing and empathic energy, but- again- it all depends on the placement. A moon in Sagittarius would be very different to a moon in Pisces, for example. Traditionally, the moon is most at home (comfortable) in a water sign. This is, of course, due to its link to emotions & the subconscious.

Key associations of your moon sign: -

    ● Meanings and associations of your inner self, feelings, deep emotions, subconscious desires, wants & needs, and soul urges. Your moon sign doesn ’ t show itself instantly to the world, it is usually parts of you only those closest understand or become aware of.

    ● Your moon sign shows how you relate to others and the world. Intimate partnerships, romantic and love interests, and friendships & family bonds all come under your moon sign. Romantic compatibility too!

    ● Emotions and more importantly your needs in emotional connections. Also, what you expect or desire out of relationships- intimate, platonic, business and everything in between.

    ● Your approach to family, children, and domestic issues; home life i.e. Do you want to travel the world with your children and show them various countries and cultures? (Something a Moon in Aries native may want to do...) Or do you want to create a beautiful, loving and safe home environment, complete with comfort, security & stability? (Desires associated with a Moon in Cancer native.)

    ● Gut reactions and primal instincts. Instinctual responses. Finally, your shadow self; the parts of self you may perceive as impure, undesirable or dark. Positively, the moon sign is your feminine and nurturing instincts, and willingness to care, show empathy and understand, and provide security and protection for those you love.

In the second book, we delve into the Moon signs.

    Rising/Ascendant

Your rising sign is also known as your ascendant sign. Just as your sun sign is your core personality, and your moon sign is your subconscious and emotional needs and triggers; the ascendant is your social or public personality. It’s the way you are perceived by others and the outside world.

It’s also representative of your physical body and outward style. How one presents themselves to the world...

Sometimes, the ascendant sign can serve as a mask or shield to your true personality, or the energy and characteristics of your sun and moon sign.

For example, say you are a Pisces sun; dreamy, receptive, imaginative, empathic and compassionate, yet negatively/in terms of shadow traits, escapist and lacking boundaries; with a Cancer moon- gentle, compassionate, intuitive and instinctual with a tendency towards manipulation and moodiness… But your rising/ascendant was in Taurus; this would provide the perfect shield for the waterier and overly emotional aspects of your astrological make-up.

The brilliant thing about astrology is that it doesn’t lie nor is it manipulative. We used this example because a Pisces sun with a Cancer moon is double water, which is deeply emotional, intuitive, and yin in nature. Of course, there are some fabulous & extraordinarily positive traits and qualities of this person; however, one could certainly say this person may be imbalanced. Yet, with a Taurus rising (Ascendant) there is beautiful balance. There is an earthy, grounded, and practical energy to support the positive qualities of the water sun and moon.

In this respect, the emotional nature of the person in question won’t always be seen by those in their social circle, or strangers and members of the public. People may instead see a wise, empathic, down-to-earth, and wholly level-headed person, who is also capable of empathy, imaginative and creative gifts, compassion etc. (the Pisces and Cancer qualities!). Note the emphasis on ‘also.’ In other words, this person would not be defined by their water sun and water moon, as the Taurus (earthy, practical, dutiful & responsible) qualities could take precedence.

And this is why your rising sign is seen as very important and part of the Sun/Moon/Rising trio. Your rising sign adds a new dimension to your personality and true nature, and provides a more holistic and complete understanding of the way you tick. Actually, without considering the rising sign there would be a lot of essential wisdom and insight lacking. Furthermore, the rising/ascendant is seen to represent physical health and well-being (in addition to outward persona, outward appearance, and the way others view you).

    Ascendant Fire Signs

Fire signs are optimistic, enthusiastic, energetic and high-spirited. They are known for their outgoing and upbeat nature. They are usually-mostly inspiring in some way- they love to express themselves through music, the Arts, drama or some form of self-expression and creativity. Their general vibe is accepting, non-judgmental, and uncritical and they have a friendly and easy-going persona.

Fire rising signs enjoy socializing and are quick communicators. For the most part, they’re charming, creative, high in life-force, and pragmatic. They know how to command respect & admiration if they should so choose, and in professional situations they can be incredibly inspiring and motivational. These rising natives are confident, self-expressive, cheerful and positive.

    Ascendant Earth Signs

Earth signs are calm, easy-going, and down-to-earth (for the most part!). They have an aura and demeaner of problem-solving, as if they are able to offer words of wisdom or a pair of listening ears at any moment. They’re resistant to stress and generally prefer to keep a level-head. They are motivational and inspiring in a cool, calm and collected way; you won’t often see grandiose or over-the-top dramatics.

Earth rising signs are gentle, modest, kind and generous. There is an aspect of selflessness to the way they approach others and life. Humble and helpful, nothing is too much when their sweet and caring side comes out. They’re sensitive too, despite being materialistic in a grounded and harmonious sense; they do possess great powers of perception. Spiritual maturity is associated with this rising element. They are dutiful, responsible, practical and good at organization and planning.

    Ascendant Air Signs

Air signs are known for their powers of persuasion and intellectual skills. They possess great abilities in conversation, socializing, mental rapport and intellectual connection. They love to socialize and are mostly independent, although they do require partnerships, friendships and social ties to function. They’re at their best when taking an active part in a group or in their larger community.

Air rising signs are very friendly and outgoing. They’re upbeat, optimistic, positive and cheerful with a communicative and self-expressive vibe. These rising signs can often be emotionally detached. It isn’t that they don’t like emotional connections, it’s just that they prefer bonding on an intellectual and mental level. Spiritual, perceptive with an open-mind, they’re quick-thinking, witty, observational and intelligent.

    Ascendant Water Signs

Water signs are emotional, intuitive, sensitive and empathic. They possess a very unique way of looking at things and life, perspectives which verge on the spiritual and psychic. Water rising signs see things in an interconnected way. They’re in tune with the subconscious and can tune into hidden feelings, archetypes, frequencies and realms of being. Possessing advanced & evolved empathy, they will know what you’re thinking, feeling; memories & experiences, current mood, health & well-being, and virtually everything going on below the surface- without being told! Telepathic ability is often present.

They are instinctual, more so than fire, earth and air rising signs. Their instincts tell them to protect and serve, be of service and be helpful in some way. Although gentle, impressionable, sensitive and sometimes over-emotional, water rising signs have a fierce protective side. They possess very strong morals & ethics, and believe in justice, fairness and equality. They are often artistic, imaginative, creatively gifted and self-expressive; they like to express themselves through music, art, the written word, poetry, drama and virtually any creative outlet.

For a full account of what your own Ascendant/rising sign means, you can read up the corresponding ‘Sun Sign’ (second book). The meaning, symbolism, and energetic associations described for each Star-Sun sign can be applied to your rising sign.

For example, if you are an Aries rising- look to the ‘Aries sun’ for key insights.

If you are a Taurus rising- look to the ‘Taurus sun,’ and so on...

Just be mindful of the difference in application. Your Sun sign is your core personality (Sun= will, life force, path, personal power, strengths & unique gifts/talents!). Your Ascendant is the mask/shield you wear and the missing piece to your whole self and integrated personality. It compliments your Moon and Sun signs, and provides an extra dimension to your true self, external motivations, and the energy & persona you project.

Chapter 2: A Deeper look at the Planets

    The power of planetary influences

It is easy to confuse astrology with solely the star sign and solar (Sun) and lunar (Moon) influences. Yet there is so much more to astrology and the study of it. Planetary influences, which are also known as planetary aspects or placements, are integral to truly understanding yourself. With this comes positive effects on relationships and self-development.

Planets are energies, astral entities emitting unique vibrations. Every living thing has an electro and magnetic energy field. Scientists, or people with a scientific mind call this electromagnetism. Spiritual people see this as an aura, yet ultimately, they’re the same thing. Each planet thus forth has an aura; an encompassing energy field with unique & specific traits and frequencies. Every quality is a frequency, hence we call vibrations vibes. We give off vibes through our thoughts, subtle impressions, beliefs, feelings and actions. Well, planets have a ‘vibe’ too but we call it an astral blueprint.

Planets are energies, astral entities emitting unique vibrations…

Not only are planets astral entities with unique and specific vibrations, they simultaneously embody an archetype. Universal archetypes run throughout human consciousness and the universe itself. In dreams, for example, we can see imagery & symbolism manifesting (showing itself) as archetypes. Famous psychologist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung came up with a set of universal archetypes inherent within the human psyche. He believed all humans share these archetypes, no matter where you were born or when; nor age, gender, culture or continent. In terms of planets and astrology, we ourselves tune into the astral energy of each planetary archetype. We do this in waking life (daily reality) and in dreams and sleep when we’re most connected to our spiritual, and subconscious selves.

We can look to a certain planet for understanding and self-awareness. Because themes, or life cycles and lessons, often show themselves at significant periods or intervals throughout life, being aware of planetary symbolism is an amazing way to reconnect to your true self.

For example, money, beauty, luxury and sensuality rule Venus. But Venus is also seen as a Goddess- the Goddess of love, beauty & sexuality. We can look to Venus, therefore, for healing and insight in these areas. The same is true for passion, action, anger or aggression and vitality (Mars), luck, abundance and expansion (Jupiter), and all the other planets.

Planets represent basic drives and impulses in the human psyche…

Planets represent basic drives and impulses in the human psyche. What’s important to note, however, is that some Star signs have an ancient and modern ruler. In other words, more than one planet can be associated with any one star sign. This can be confusing, but the best way to see it is that your ancient ruler represents an old version of you, a part of your soul or psyche from a previous lifetime, if you believe in this; or simply something you have outgrown and evolved from.

Your modern ruling planet is your current self. Below are two prime examples.

    Scorpio

Scorpio is currently ruled by Pluto, the planet of rebirth and alchemical transformation. Pluto is all about positive change and gradual development. Mars, Scorpio’s ancient (old) ruler is symbolic of anger, aggression, and war.

Now when we look at the modern (Current) star sign associated with Mars; Aries, we can see how positive this shift is. Scorpio has left (or is leaving, currently evolving on from) the impulsive, aggressive, lustful and war-like characteristic of Mars. Aries is extremely impatient, competitive, temperamental and angry verging on aggressive. Regardless of how affectionate, caring, kind or loving an Aries can be, they will always hold onto these traits. There is no escaping this aspect of self, it is a core part of their personality and true nature.

So, Scorpio is transitioning on from these ‘Arian’ (Aries), or Martian (Mars), traits. The watery, emotional and empathic- and deeply soulful sign Scorpio is one of the most spiritual signs of the Zodiac (apart from Pisces, the ‘Old Soul’ and empath of the Zodiac!). Scorpios may still hold qualities and traits of their ancient ruler; passion, resourcefulness, ambition, intensity… Yet, they balance and integrate this with empathy, soul, and emotional depth & understanding. This is largely due to Pluto.

    Pisces

The second example is Pisces, another water sign, which is interesting to note. Water is adaptable, receptive, magnetic, and impressionable; it goes with the flow and changes with the times. It may not come as a surprise, therefore, that two out of three water signs have evolved and changed planetary rulers.

Pisces is now ruled by Neptune, the planet of illusions, mysticism, spirituality and the Arts. The Arts is quite broad, it encompasses imagination, creativity, and artistic self-expression. But Neptune also relates to the subconscious mind, compassion, mercy, faith, hope, spiritual enlightenment, and unconditional (universal) love. It is the most spiritually evolved planet.

And Pisces is the most spiritually evolved star sign... Pisces are the old souls, the final and twelfth star sign and the only sign to embody the positive qualities & characteristics of all 12 zodiac signs. In the Zodiac wheel, they are last; you can clearly see their journey around the circle. Psychic receptivity, intuition, inspiration and dreams all come under Neptune’s realm too, and these are traits Pisces embody and excel.

The planet Pisces has just ‘left,’ so this sweet, spiritual and sensitive water sign’s ancient planet, is Jupiter. Jupiter is about luck & expansion and is currently ruling Sagittarius. In truth, there is nothing wrong with Jupiter- it doesn’t have the negative wrap Mars has, and it certainly isn’t a war-like planet or astral entity. Nevertheless, Sagittarius does lack the depth and emotional wisdom (or supreme compassion) Pisces possesses… and Sagittarius can be seen to be a perfect representation of Jupiter’s expansive and light energy.

So, Pisces has evolved, arguably, to a higher vibration. In astrology this is known as a higher octave.

The other two signs with both a modern and ancient ruler are Virgo, and Aquarius.

The astrological planets are known as the seven heavenly bodies to the ancients. The Sun and Moon were considered as lights, not planets; due to the connection to astronomy as well as astrology. Mercury, Venus and Mars were called ‘personal planets’ - they represented (and still do) our most personal & intimate, and immediate drives.

    Sun

The Sun: Will, ego, psyche, and unique personality. Your primary, conscious (in the light) driving forces and motivations.

    Size: 432,168.6 miles, 695,508 kilometers

Orbit: One year (around the Zodiac)

    Element: Fire

    SIGN Rulership: Leo

    House: 5th House

As briefly explored earlier, the Sun is your personality. It relates to your willpower, primary forces and motivations, sense of service, and life purpose & path. The Sun is a giver of life, energy, vitality and longevity- it represents your conscious mind in astrology. Your will to live, follow your passions and strengths, and engage fully in life with conscious and mindful awareness relates to the Sun. It is also your creative life force.

Holistically speaking, the Sun’s placement in your natal (birth) chart is positive, but it is also your ego. Your psyche is connected to the Sun, your psyche being your whole self & personality. Basic identity, self-realization, and adulthood come under the Sun’s planetary symbolism. When we are most happy and complete (integrated and balanced) we can be seen to be in tune with our Sun sign. The Sun’s expression is one’s self-identity, so identifying with your Sun sign and all of the qualities & associations (without over-identifying) opens a doorway to your true self.

    Unlike the Moon sign,
