I want to thank God for this life I am living and sharing today. I am truly grateful for my past and would personally like to thank my mother, Martha V. Johnson, for providing me with the best example a mother could, despite her handicaps and disabilities. Thanks to my father, Willie Johnson, Sr., the greatest dad on this planet (when he was sober); to my sister, Celestine Holland, one of the strongest women I have ever met and one of my greatest supporters; and to my niece, Miacha Kneiling, my biggest fan. Regardless of my behavior, her love is unconditional. I owe much gratitude to my wife, Kimber Johnson, who is the perfect complement to me and allows me to be all I can be regardless of how crazy I could be. She is the confronter of the family. My son, Marco Little Bam
Johnson, showed me how to be a father, teacher, and leader. Thank you to Nailah Johnson, my daughter, who takes my words and makes them readable along with loving me more through her discovery. Nailah reminded me of letting go and letting God. My son, Marshieh Johnson, is the angel who constantly raises me to new heights. Brother Byron Minns, my spiritual brother who showed me how to be a family man; Master Brown, my martial arts father; Master Casel, who showed me tough love; Brother D for showing me how to love myself; and Nancy Musick, for supporting me and believing in my dreams. To David Ripianzi of YMAA publishing, for the long phone conversations and for believing in this book. Last a thank you to Jeff VanDenbergh, my black belt student that I watch blossom into a trusting friend that helped me make my words universal.
Dedication
I dedicate this book to every bully, bad law officer, sexual predator, thug, drug dealer, drug user, hustler, and killer who preys on honest law-abiding citizens; to the dangerous streets of East Baltimore Lafayette projects, and to the correctional facilities of Murdermore (the nickname for Baltimore city). I appreciate the crabs in this basket of hatefulness, jealousy, and degeneration of people who tried their best to hold me captive to a deadly lifestyle that eventually leads to death, jail, or institutes. It is because I once loved everything about this violent lifestyle that I strive each day to avoid anything that could take me back.
Introduction
Over the years I have written about the spiritual principles that came through me and became my vehicle for personal expression. I have written about the steps I have taken to keep me from repeating any of my old behaviors. However, this is the first time that I have presented these urban combative principles for better physical execution in everyday life (before the first punch, kick, take-down, or weapon is used).
These 18 key principles helped me to get through jail without fighting and to earn the respect of inmates and officers through my day-to-day display. Later on, I was able to go back to the neighborhood and people I helped destroy, or who helped me destroy myself, and be an example of personal transformation without resting on my laurels. These principles helped me to learn to live at peace from the inside out, regardless of what happens. They have allowed me to follow good orderly directions from within myself, regardless of any
