My love life is on hold because my heart and mind are preoccupied by my business day and night. I remember those happy days; we were so in love with each other that we couldn’t get enough of one another! Other people say to their loved ones, I love you,
out of their mouths with feeling! But Sarah and I - our love comes from our hearts, minds, and souls. I wish I could have those days back once again, as I wouldn’t make the same mistake twice that made me feel lost and alone! I remember we were on top of the world; nothing mattered but our happiness, and now I don’t understand what happened. I didn’t know if you didn’t know what you wanted in a relationship, or if you were looking for something or someone else.
Love wasn’t hard or difficult between us! Loving you was so easy, because I felt I needed you in my life, and you were the only woman for me! We could look into each other’s eyes and express the love in our hearts. Nonetheless, I will love you always; you have not given me a choice. You have total control of my heart and I surrender my love to you! It gives me hope to look into your eyes to see love in you! Now, I just walk around with my head down, with dark clouds over my head everywhere I go. It pains me to not have you close.
I always heard that men don’t cry, but I am here to tell you that it isn’t true. Here I am breaking the rules of crying over lost love. I never thought I would be in this position, trying to mend our broken relationship. So here I am, sad and lonely and at a loss of what to do about this love situation that Sarah and I are going through.
INTRODUCTION
Our relationship began eleven months ago in a big city that I was passing through, when I exited off the highway for gas. I hadn’t been in this state or this city before and I didn’t know anyone in this city. This city in particular looked like every big city I had ever visited, and I loved to visit and window shop and see all of the business buildings in the city and make time to visit many restaurants and stores.
Because I live in a small town, it doesn’t have all the luxurious things that the big city does. But I do not want to live in a big city, because I would probably be out of place there. I finally found a gas station after I took the exit from the highway and I pulled in, thinking about what to do in this big city. Then all of a sudden, I looked up and there she was - the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life. I hardly talked to myself but this woman had me saying in my mind, she is one of a kind and out of my league, with her beauty and upper-class appearance. A person like me has no business talking to the likes of her.
While I pumped my gas, I couldn’t take my eyes off her.
I tried to tell myself, she is just another woman, but I may be missing out on true happiness as well. I had to talk myself into going up to her and talking to her, where she was standing on the sidewalk window shopping. I got in my car and drove across the street and parked behind her, got out of my car and walked toward her. She didn’t notice me standing beside her. I said,
excuse me, I saw you from the other side of the street and I had a talk with myself about you. I had a debate about talking to you and here I am speaking to you. My name Alfred, and you grabbed my attention from across the street because of your beauty. It took a lot of courage to push myself to come up to you."
I continued. "I don’t know you or your name, but something was pulling me toward you; it feels good in my soul to get to know you, beyond your beauty and outward appearance. I feel like I could be myself around you and tell you all about me, and I feel like you and I would be good together. I guess am here asking you for a chance for us to be together."
My name is Sarah, I haven’t seen you here before.
Sarah, I am passing through, but now since I met you I was thinking of staying here in your city for awhile so we can get to know and learn more about each other. I always wanted to own my own business and the only thing I need is my laptop; from there I can keep my business going from anywhere.
Sarah asked me, what do you do with my business?
I said, I find the best location for people's business buildings on my laptop and I travel a lot to see the locations for them. For example, if you need a location for your business, I would ask you which state, city or town you are planning for your business to be located. Then I’d go to my laptop to map out the state, city or town to view the location, and then I’d choose the best locations on the computer. I would travel to the locations to see them and pick out the best location for your business, so that people can easily find and get to your business.
Alfred, you have a very interesting job and life, as well as having the luxury of traveling while on your job. Are you on your way to a location to pick out a business location now?
No, I left from Texas on a location and I was just heading back home. But I decided to stay here in your city to be with you, spend time with you, and build a relationship with you.
Alfred, that sounds good to me. You are interesting and I want to know about you. But, we have to take things slow because I don’t want to mess things up before the relationship begins.

The Year I Started My Own Business
My nine-to-five job kept me busy and working overtime a lot, to the point where I didn’t have time for myself after I got home. Every night it would be maybe after eleven o’clock when I would get ready for bed, and I didn’t have time to go out and have fun. My life was just work and go home and work some more; I didn’t have a life or friends. And I thought about this every night in bed - I’d be up for hours just thinking, how could I change my life so that I can have friends and have time to meet a woman to have a serious relationship with? Every night these things were on my mind and I would play it out in my mind to have friends to go out with and have a good time, talking and going to different places as a group of people, like at a movie theater or at a party or at a bowling alley. It was a life I dreamed of.
And I would also tell myself every night while I was in bed, that I didn’t have time for a relationship, but I was a lonely man. Every night I got about three hours of sleep just thinking of a life that I do not have outside of my work, and when I thought of a type of woman that might be right for me, I would say out loud, she have to be beautiful inside and outside, and have a good heart, and we would have to have things in common.
Every night I started feeling sad about my life, I would think about and dream of a life for me before I would fall asleep every night.
On this special morning of January 14th, 2003, while I was getting ready for work an idea came to me - that this year I was going to set my goal higher to start my own business. While I was driving to work, I became determined to learn all about my job and how it would run. Everything I did on my job involved taking notes and reporting on my co-workers work. And I had to learn about finance to run a business as well. I arrived at my job then said to myself, today is the day I’ll begin to learn and study how I can run a business just like this business. I was walking down the hall on my way to my office, and I spoke to everyone in the office how good I was feeling and how excited I was because I was planning for my future in owning my own business and having time to enjoy my life.
I finally made it to my office. I had to be at my desk before nine o’clock every day before the other people started their jobs. I had a desk job and I had to make sure all the information was correct on the computers before the day began. I had to do my work whilst learning and studying to run my business within the eight hours I worked each and every day without falling behind on my current job. All day I’d be working on the computer and making calls, getting information about different buildings in different states, cities, and towns. Some days I’d leave the office to go to the library and the chancery clerk office to do some work, going through records and more information that I could find on our next projects as well. Then I’d have to go back to the office with the information to input it into the computer, then with the paperwork I’d file it into the filing cabinet. At the end of the day, I’d go back to my computer and go through everyone’s work before our boss man saw it, and from there he’d check it again and log it in to the main computer in New York at the end of the work day.
I would be the last person to leave out of the office every evening, then head straight home like every other evening after work. Because I knew I had work at home waiting for me like every evening after my job ended, I would work in my house and outside until eight or nine o’clock at night and then begin to cook dinner. I would never cook much because it would only be me here in the house, so I didn’t need to cook a big meal every night. After dinner I’d clean up the kitchen then go to the living room to relax.
I would stay up watching television until eleven o’clock every night, and I’d leave the television on all night and stay up thinking about another life that I was living in with my friends and a girlfriend. Every night in my mind I would carry out a different scene that I’d be in, creating a fantasy world and wishing it were true, living a happy life out of my thoughts in bed. Tonight my fantasy life took place with my girlfriend and I meeting up with my friends and their dates downtown at a restaurant. I had finished getting dressed for my date, and I was looking for my keys so I could leave the house to pick up my date, Susan. I arrived at Annie’s home and I was hoping that she wasn’t waiting on me too long, I was walking toward when the outside light came on and the door opened up. Annie stepped in the doorway with a smile; she looked happy to see me and kissed me. So, I stopped worrying about the bad things that would happen on our date, since Annie seemed happy. That alone made me happy as well.
At the restaurant where we were all going to have our dinner date, our friends and their dates were already there standing up on the sidewalk by the restaurant door when we arrived. When our friends saw us, they all hugged us before we all went inside of the restaurant. We all started looking for a good table for eight people, and tonight we all ordered the steak and baked potatoes. We all enjoyed ourselves eating, talking, laughing and having a great time, and we stayed in the restaurant for two hours enjoying ourselves. We all ended the night saying goodbye and going our own way with our dates. I went to get my car to take Annie home, and Susan was standing on the sidewalk waiting for me with the car. Annie smiled and thought to herself, "I love Alfred so much that I would never love anyone like I love him!"
I drove the car back up front to the restaurant where Annie was waiting for me, and in the meantime I was thinking, tonight went well with everyone and everyone had a good time, especially Annie and I. Tonight was special between Susan and I, being with our friends and people seeing us out in public being a couple. That may be a small thing, but it means a lot in a relationship. Before Annie got into the car, she took me in her arms and told me, Alfred, thank you for making this night so special!
Then she gave me a long, passionate kiss before softly saying in my ear, I love you.
After that kiss, I said, Annie, I love you too - with all of my heart!
Then I hugged her and I said, let me take you home and end a perfect evening.
On the drive home to Annie’s house, she couldn’t take her eyes off of me. That made me feel good in my heart. We both said nothing the whole ride there, but our feelings for each other were evident. I pulled up at Annie’s home and I walked around the car to open the car door for her, and she looked into my eyes and kissed me again and again. Then I walked her to her front door, gave her a good night kiss and I said, Annie, I love you!
She replied, I love you too, Alfred.
Then I turned around and walked back to my car.
Suddenly I woke up from my dream. I had three hours of sleep before I had to get up to cook breakfast and get ready for work. My alarm went off at five o’clock this morning, and I got up to head to the kitchen. On my way to work I was thinking of the thoughts I had last night about a good life with my friends and my girlfriend. That put a smile upon my face, and I was hoping today would be a good day for me. Like every day, I would be the first one who started working, checking the work on the computer for yesterday’s work. Later all of my coworkers would start coming in to work, and I had lots to do. Today was particularly hard on me, as I was trying to do my job at the same time as learning and taking notes to start up my own business. I didn’t know the president of the company was watching me and the good work I was doing, because at two o’clock he called me to his office.
When I arrived at the office there was another person with him, and I didn’t know what to think. The president said to me, this is Mr. Brown, and he is going to be your trainer to run this company.
I said, Thank you for providing me with this opportunity in your company; I will do my best and not let you down for the position.
Mr. Brown said, you can call me Bill.
I walked over to Mr. Brown and held my hand out to shake his hand and said, glad to meet you and to be working with you. I’m Alfred, and whatever you need me to do, I will make sure the work is done!
The president told Mr. Brown, Alfred is a good worker; he’s always the first worker here and the last worker to leave the building. I had been watching Alfred work and his work is so outstanding that he deserves this position.
The president then told Mr. Brown and I to follow him out of his office to our new office, where he told Mr. Brown, your job is to train Alfred in all the things to run this company.
He then left the office to get ready to catch his flight to New York to the main office, where he would stay and oversee the company as a whole.
Bill then turned to me and said, "Alfred, for now I will be doing all of the work, and your job is to learn the job and take notes and pay attention to every detail."
I agreed and said, Mr. Brown, I’m going to my old office to get my things and bring them here to this new office.
Okay Alfred, call me Bill, and come quickly so we can get back to work.
Okay, I don’t have much in my office to move. I will be back in twenty or thirty minutes and then we can get started on where we left off on the project.
Bill was going through the paperwork of the project while I was cleaning out my old office. When I got back Bill started explaining the project. "This project is in the state of Texas, and we have to find the best location for a shopping mall that will be open seven days a week. We need to get online, go to a map of Texas, search every big city there for a best location for a shopping mall, and then we can view those cities and see what’s near to the location like restaurants, gas stations, homes, and schools to make this location convenient and ideal.
Then, we do all the paperwork for the cities we pick out for the location, and then we file every document and report on this project into the computer under the file name ‘Texas Shopping Mall.’
Bill told Alfred, most of our projects are located in the state of Texas, and now we have to go home to pack clothes and other things that you might need for the trip. We’ll be there for two weeks.
Bill then told me to go home to pack, and that he’d pick me up tomorrow morning at seven o’clock at my house, saying he’d be here in the office another two hours loading the company car up with the laptop computer, files, maps, reports, and anything that we would need on the job.
I’ll see you in the morning,
I said. Bill, you need me to do anything before I leave the office
?
I have it under control here, Alfred. I see you in the morning at seven o’clock.
So, I left the office, thinking about how lucky I was getting this position and receiving help to learn more about this job. This proposition would also put me closer to my dream of owning my own business, since it was essentially teaching me how to run a business just like this business.
I was so excited for this new chapter in my life, even though I knew I would have a lot of responsibility and need leadership skills to carry out my work. I began to think about what to pack for the business trip in Texas. I thought it best to bring extra things for the trip that we might need on the location site, because it is better to have everything than not having anything at all or lacking some things.
I pulled up into my driveway, and my next door neighbor Mr. Smith was outside in his front yard when I drove up. I walked toward Mr. Smith to speak to him and said, today I received a new proposition for my job and I have to go on a business trip to Texas for two weeks. Tomorrow morning I will be on my way there. Would you check on my house while I’m gone and get my mail and newspapers?
"Sure Alfred, it ain’t
