To all my children, and to everyone’s children.
Parenting is not a popularity contest. It is a calling and challenge of God, so each child will view God as a loving father and mother so when mature will be born from above, as young adults into eternal life. Good brain mind body health promotes such faith!
Foreword
This year marks my forty-fifth year since my first job at the Princeton Brain Bio Center. Back then, the brain was not studied like it is today. But one of the great United States government researchers and former chairman of a major university center, Dr. Carl Pfeiffer, ran the Princeton Brain Bio Center. It’s there that I was first introduced to the idea that the brain controls the body of your children’s health. I am now the co-chairman of an international team that is creating the guidelines for computerized neurocognitive assessments and brain imaging for the Society of Brain Mapping. So, it’s fair to say that your child’s brain has been on my mind for most of my adult life.
However, children’s brains are still not getting the attention they deserve, which is why I wrote this book. There is a war for the brain of every child, and I know I can produce a miracle and a victory. This book is meant to start a revolution in the field of pediatrics. Think of this book as your pediatric and adolescent Bible. I know that your children can be happier, more blessed, and healthier than ever. The reasons are simple: we now know so much more about the body and the brain. We know that most infections cause a problem with our immune system, which then attacks our body and brain: that is COVID-19 in a nutshell. And we also know how to build a better immune system and test it to make sure it’s protecting your child.
We also know that the human brain has a developmental cycle, and by age thirty, it’s already starting to slow down. A person with dementia experiences retrogenesis, the brain deteriorates in the reverse order that the brain developed from birth (for more information see http://www.medafile.com/). My brain-based research and program can prevent retrogenesis, and when it comes to children, the same theories and practices can be used in reverse. This exciting new theory has taught me that the proper pediatric program can help any child gain intellect during the Pediatric period of life!
This is why the care and management of your child’s brain are crucial: It must be mature and stable enough to learn, adapt, and grow throughout childhood, adolescents, young adulthood, and into adulthood. You’ll read how your children can be cognitively enhanced because now we can measure all aspects of their thinking. Best of all, the testing is online and can be done right at home. There are so many great new memory tests and attention tests and creative IQ, emotional IQ, abstract IQ tests available, and common-sense IQ. Almost every aspect of the developing human brain can be improved, and you can have your child optimized to have the greatest learning possible. Raising the intelligence quotients means increasing the health and happiness of your child.
Managing a child’s development is the hardest thing any parent ever does, and it’s the most rewarding. Whatever they put into their mouth, how effectively they can smell, what they hear and watch, all contribute to their wellbeing. Epigenetics shows us that we each have the ability to make ourselves into something more than we’re genetically born into it. As a parent, your job is to give your child every advantage to make the most of what they can be exposed to.
Every child can have what Jesus calls in John 10:10 an abundant life. The lessons in this book cover children of all ages because the practice of pediatrics has expanded beyond young adulthood and adolescents all the way to age twenty-six. If you have very young children, you’re going to prepare them for the massive adjustments that occur around puberty, from ten to fourteen, often called temporary insanity of the teenager, steroid psychosis. And if you have teenagers or older children, you are going to give them the health tools they need so that later they can make the right decisions when they are on their own. By making them healthier, by nature, they will become holier.
Along the way, you are also going to learn how to be a better parent. A study of character and personality will fulfill you in bringing your children to be the loving, sacrificial, high contact children that God will bless throughout their life. Childhood is designed to train them to become a man or a woman, and parents that don’t bring them up in love are vulnerable to God’s judgment. It’s easy to placate your kids with an iPhone or with ice cream. The true parent is willing to dole out the tough love and make hard decisions. We want to teach our kids to control their behavior, character, and fruits of the spirit, even when things are not going their way.
Don’t worry if you’re not a perfect mother and father with money, wealth, professional, or financial success. God can pour out more love into our hearts as we are healthy, not wealthy. The secret is simple: the best way to take care of your child is to take care of yourself by example. But if you can’t do that, you’ll work on your child and maybe your child will teach you.
Parents and grandparents will benefit from the following ten suggestions as to how best to use this book to benefit their child’s physical and emotional development.
Read the book and absorb its teachings, that the brain and mind are the most important parts of the body, and generally ignored by pediatricians.
Select the attributes or conditions that apply to your child.
Locate the list of vitamins/supplements that apply to each condition.
Design a routine for your child. This includes a sleep schedule, reading time, exercise time, etc.
Incorporate food and beverage dietary changes. A low to no sugar diet, almost no white flour, wheat flour, low fat, and whole grains, always thinking spices and herbal teas of different color, fresh spices. Have children help create and prepare meals. Following the Rainbow Diet, utilizing various colored fruits and vegetables will add a fun incentive. Two related scripture references are: Beware of sweet dainties, they are deceitful food
(Book of Proverbs). Fat is for the Lord
(Book of Leviticus)
Have your child take memory, attention, and school evaluation tests that act like mini-SAT’s.
If they’re keeping up academically, there are great opportunities ahead.
Start a journal of health for each of your children. The rule is with children, particularly when they’re young, is check and re-check, check and re-check. Maintain height and weight measurements. It’s not just an issue of weight. You need to know your child’s muscle mass. Many children have abnormally low muscle mass called sarcopenia and abnormally low bone density called childhood osteopenia or osteoporosis.
Set reasonable goals
for each category where change is desired.
Identify your child’s dominant learning style is visual or auditory. Teach him or her to use or to be aware of their cognitive style. Also, teach them to use or be aware of the opposite style so that they ultimately benefit from both. We are born with a cognitive style. The best we can do is to develop other dimensions. So the visual person may be a little more careful in selecting people to hire, or in choosing friends or schoolmates that have better auditory processing.
Teach children the importance, responsibility, and character development of doing chores. Provide children with a good education in the concept of saving money. Learning how to budget one’s money at an early age prepares them well for the future.
Introduction
It’s never too late to save your child and restore their physical or mental health. Many of my patients are sinking big money into rehab for their kids when they are just fifteen years old. The reason is their child’s brain has become imbalanced—imbalances that lead to chronic mental and physical conditions.
Children all over the United States are getting off on the wrong foot. Our country has failed our children in the practice of pediatrics, and the proofs are the massacres at Columbine, Oklahoma City, Sandy Hook, and Boston; unfortunately, the list goes on. Poor health habits, abuse, and medical conditions developed in childhood and mistreated have real social and economic consequences in adulthood. Study after study has shown that the first 1000 days of life influences health and intellectual capacity, yet millions of children are not getting the healthcare they deserve.
Adverse childhood experiences affect the way that a child’s brain develops in terms of social, emotional, and cognitive growth. When these areas are negatively influenced, when young children grow into teenagers, their decision-making skills are impaired, which leads to adopting risky behaviors, such as early involvement with sex, drugs and alcohol, and violence. These behaviors can lead to disease, disability, and even early death.
Our children are not developing the capacity for mood stability. They don’t sleep well at night because they are taking Ritalin, or they have sinus and snoring problems or sleep disorders that haven’t been treated. They are under treated for Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses, and their immune system is ill-equipped to fight off infections. They are treated for depression without being treated for mood stabilization. They are getting inadequate nutrition training and become adults who are addicted to carbs, sugar, and salt. They are getting diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol as teenagers due to their diet of eating too much fat and junk foods. Or they have attention problems, which can be signaled with something as trivial as poor posture. Our children are sick, and we must reverse this trend now.
All the lessons I’ve learned about reversing the signs and symptoms of aging applies to the way that children develop. We have the ability to lengthen lifespans to almost unheard of ages but think for one moment how much simpler your child’s life would be if they never have to deal with the lifestyle-related diseases that cause premature aging. Children need their parents to invest in their health from conception onward.
As I have been saying for the past forty-five years, all health starts with the brain. Having raised five kids of my own and treating thousands of children and adolescents over the years, I’ve come to realize that having a child is a thirty-year brain development project. The growing, changing, maturing brain has to be prepared and stabilized during the first ten years of life in order to handle the enormous changes brought on by the transition to adulthood. Without a stable brain, your child may be prone to depression and anxiety, eating disorders, and violent outbursts. Instead, I can teach you how to manage your child’s health with easy lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, better sleep, and, when necessary, proper medication. Just as an imbalanced brain predicts dementia in children, it affects cognition. It turns out the relationship between how we come into this world and how we go out of the world is very connected to our behavior, our cognition, and our health.
Early diagnosis of children’s physical and mental health issues is critical, and one of the underlying principles of this book. The whole health system needs to be turned on its head so that we’re spending more money on our children and less on the dead. The trend is already starting. For example, there is a whole new field of pediatric psychiatry that is showing virtually all of the psychiatric problems that show up later in life are diagnosable early on. We now know that all of the brain imaging studies we are doing on older people have more value in predicting children’s brain health issues. With the same technology, we are preventing suicide, depression, and enhancing cognition. With the right preventative protocol, as outlined in this book, we’ll be able to take care of our children from the beginning, maximizing their potential in every aspect of their lives.
This book provides the medical training every parent can master in order to raise great kids. Shepherding your child to adulthood doesn’t have to be difficult. As the Bible says, Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
(Proverbs 22:6 NIV). I am going to train you to be the best parent you can be, so you can train your children how to take care of their health. I believe it is the greatest gift any parent can give a child. By embracing these lessons, we can produce the greatest generation of Americans.
Your Child’s Ability to Achieve Perfect Health Begins with You
Preventing childhood disease starts in the womb. Mothers can actually affect the expression of their child’s genes by living better in three core areas: better diet, avoidance of environmental pollutants, and reducing stress.
Good eating habits start in the womb, and so do bad ones. This is because if maternal nutrient intake is poor, it impacts cellular proliferation, differentiation, size, and complexity. These changes not only affect health but academic success. It’s well established that young adults who were exposed to alcohol prenatally had persistent difficulties with math.¹ It’s generally well-accepted that the children of women who were overweight before pregnancy scored lower on measures of neurocognitive development, with deficits in motor and memory scales.²
A pregnant woman who gets the right amount of choline, fish oil, and folic acid can protect their child’s brain from the future development of schizophrenia, psychiatric problems, and cognitive problems. Pregnant women need to make sure that they are getting the recommended doses of copper, protein, iodine, B vitamins, folate, healthy fats, zinc, and iron. What’s interesting here is that these same nutrients are what children need throughout their life. A mother who follows a healthy diet during pregnancy will birth a healthier, bigger baby, and bigger babies often become smarter kids. A 2014 study of children in Florida found that babies who were heaviest at birth scored higher in math and reading tests from third through eighth grade, and were more likely to have higher SAT scores over time.
A 2013 article appearing in the New York Times explained how researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center (…) in Philadelphia have found that babies born to mothers who eat a diverse diet (…) while pregnant and breastfeeding are more open to a wide range of flavors, (…) and carry those preferences into childhood and adulthood.
³ I believe that this information puts babies fed formula at a disadvantage because the flavor in packaged formula never changes.
⁴ But formula is only part of the problem since breastfed babies of mothers eating too many refined and processed foods are also at risk
of developing poor dietary habits.⁵ And as children become weaned off the breast or bottle, "parents who are eating a diet high in processed, refined foods are feeding their babies as they feed themselves, and could be setting their children up for a lifetime of bad eating.⁶
Another study found that exposure to a maternal junk food diet results in children with a preference for these same foods.⁷ A second study from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health found that children born to mothers who took antibiotics in their second or third trimester had a higher risk of childhood obesity by age seven, as did children delivered by cesarean section.⁸
It is generally accepted in the medical community that women breastfeed exclusively for at least six months" and then continue some breastfeeding as they introduce solid foods for the next six months. I believe that a better recommendation would be to have mothers breastfeed and clean up their diet at the same time.
If you want to do what’s best for your child’s health, the first step will always be taking care of yourself. For example, the way you manage your mental health affects the mental health of your children. Children of depressed mothers have a higher prevalence of anxiety, conduct disorders, depression, substance abuse, and psychiatric disorders compared to children of non-depressed mothers.
The Brain Mind Body Connection: The Top Factors for your Child’s Wellbeing
My goal is nothing short of giving you the opportunity to reverse the trend of poor health for your child, and instead, point them towards a more vibrant future. I’ve created a protocol that fosters a new miracle young adult. My young patients are getting better sleep, mood, and overall health. Not only am I treating the children, I’m also helping parents improve their parenting skills.
The outcome is the end of adolescent insanity. The whole purpose of this program is to get kids mature enough by age twelve so that when their hormones kick in during puberty, they don’t go insane with the stimulus. It is about setting them up with good health now, and nipping bad habits before they cause irreversible damage. I’m about fewer antibiotics, more prevention.
This book is about the end of kids with circles under their eyes. It’s the end of slouching children who have weak bones and are breaking too many bones. You’ll learn how to teach your kids about the importance of sleep so that their moods are always better. We’re not allowing headaches to persist because we’re treating them with the herb feverfew, riboflavin, and other nutrients instead of harmful, addictive medications. We’re teaching
