Drawings of Hollywood 1920-1939 - Alan Dale Daniel

    The Flapper

    She changed the world

    Lillian Gish

    (1893–1993)

The First Lady of American Cinema

Legendary film star of silent and talking movies. Her films include: The Birth of A Nation (1915), Intolerance (1916), The Scarlet Letter (1926), and many more epics. Her film career spanned 75 incomparable years. She appeared in 119 films.

Lillian’s first film was, An Unseen Enemy (1912). Her first sound film was, One Romantic Night (1930).

She died in 1993 at 99 years of age in New York City.

    Lillian Gish

Some of Lillian’s first roles were directed by D. W. Griffith, one of the great directors of American cinema.

    Danger Outside

In the long ago silent movies (approximately 1910–1927), the heroine was often in danger and awaiting salvation by the man she loves.

Today, the women save themselves, collect the bad guys, along with the reward, replace their man with a younger model, and roar off into the moonrise in a fast car. It’s not 1920 anymore.

This lost world of the silent movies had its special charms. As you look through this book, try and place yourself into that era. Imagine a day when men were supposed to be heroic, while women were angelic, gentle, kind, loving, and longing for eternal true love from her one-and-only man. This odd sounding world really existed. Watching the silent movies communicates this atmosphere of the age. Honor was very important, purity in marriage essential, and God watched over the affairs of men bestowing blessings on those of good heart, washed mind… err… pure mind, and lofty intentions, while bestowing proper and just punishment on evil doers and their demonic helpers.

Here, Lillian worries as she awaits rescue. Typical movie plot for the early film era.

    Lillian Gish

As Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter (1926)

Hester Prynne to her young pastor and paramour: It would be pleasant, sir, to walk beside thee and hear thee condemn me for my sins.

Wow…where can I get a gal like that?

    Lon Chaney

    (1883–1930)

The man of a thousand faces—shown in his famous role, The Phantom of the Opera (1925). He also played in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) as Quasimoto the bell ringer, The Miracle Man (1919), The Penalty (1920), The Unknown (1927), London After Midnight (1927), and The Unholy Three (1930), all well known films in the 1920s.

Lon appeared in films between 1912-1930 and was critically acclaimed for many films including He Who Gets Slapped (1924), and Tell It To The Marines (1926). Because of his ability to alter his appearance, he might be the most famous unrecognizable star ever.

Chaney was twice married and had one son, Lon Chaney, Jr.

He died of a throat hemorrhage in August of 1930.

    Theda Bara

    (1815–1955)

Theda Bara, who had mysterious good looks, was the big screen’s first studio built star. Fox Studio, who held her contract through most of her career, falsely claimed she was born in the Sahara to a Frenchman and an Arab concubine, and had magical powers. Theda was actually born in Ohio.

Her first role was an extra in The Stain (1914), soon followed by her breakout film as the vampire in A Fool There Was (1915). Miss Bara was on her way to early silent film stardom. Theda’s second film that year, was Kreutzer Sonata (1915). Theda was hot property now. She made six more films in 1915, finishing up with Carmen (1915). The next year brought eight Theda Bara films, all of which made good money for Fox. In 1917 Fox headed to California and took Theda along. That year she starred in a mega-hit, Cleopatra (1917). This was quickly followed by The Rose of Blood (1917). In 1918 Theda wrote the story and starred as the Priestess in The Soul of Buddha (1918). After seven films in 1919, ending with Lure of Ambition (1919), her contract was terminated by Fox, and her career never recovered. She died at 69 years of age of cancer.
