「白團」為臺灣戰後時期的日軍顧問團,1949年成立於日本東京,並隨即到臺灣幫助中華民國政府,與1951年成立的美軍顧問團,及1936年成立的德國軍事顧問團,號稱中華民國三大外國軍事顧問團。

    An Introduction

    After the ruling Kuomintang and its army retreated to Taiwan in 1949, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek recruited in secret to retrain, reinvigorate and thus reinforce his army, and in the meanwhile to establish a powerful military mobilization system, both to deny the imminent invasion of Taiwan by the People’s Liberation Army.  The Generalissimo was enthusiastic to counterattack Mainland China in order to regain power over China, given that with military strategies formulated and tailored by those Japanese elite military officers and the US armament.

    The Japanese MAAG has been referred to as 白团 (paidan) in Taiwan’s files.  The military advisory battalion is headed by 富田直亮 (Tomita Naosuke) with his Chinese code name 白鴻亮 (Bai Hongliang).  Tomita’s such Chinese code name is prefixed by , meaning White that is in a political contrast to the Red China.  By the same token, (Hong) means to be ambitious; (Liang) to retain the last kanji of his Japanese name.
