    We all know how important food is for our very survival. Next to air and water, it is one of the essentials.

    I have always believed our food can be used as our medicine. In some instances, food is absolutely needed to help cure a condition. This is because food simply helps to boost our immunity when we are ill. When we are weak, it serves to strengthen us and speeds the healing process.

    The foods we eat every day provide us with the nutrients and energy we need to survive. The protein in food helps maintain our body’s form and shape, giving us the important amino acids that help build our body’s cells and tissues. This is what helps to maintain our frame’s function and shape.

    Food helps us when we are injured or recovering from a broken bone. It helps us to overcome pain and can accelerate the healing process by providing our body with essential vitamins and minerals.

    Food can help to alleviate stress, as mineral-rich foods can serve as calming comfort to our systems. A healthy diet comprised of healthy foods can be a shield against the damages of the excessive stress we so often feel these days.

    Lastly, sitting down to a table with great friends and wonderfully healthy dishes is a great way to strengthen bonds. As an Italian, I can tell you that some of my fondest memories are those of breaking bread with my dearest friends and family. Sharing a wonderful meal with those we love and care about creates a lifelong bond!

    With all of this in mind, you can see just how important our food is on so many levels. It is essential to life itself. And we are only as healthy as the food we put into our bodies.

    However, we are living in days where a huge issue is coming to light. This light grows brighter every moment, shining on a problem that may actually be at the root of the epidemic of illnesses that have been increasing exponentially over the past four decades.

    Those of us with the best of intentions and even the most discriminating eye for the best and healthiest food choices are affected by this issue. As we strive to eat a healthier diet, many of us have adopted a plant-based regimen. This is especially the case when trying to overcome an autoimmune disease. But what do we do when we find that even our most fervent efforts fail and our disease only continues to get worse?

    The answer may very well lie within the pages of this book.

    Many plant-based diets are comprised of vegetables that have been shown to have levels of an herbicide known as glyphosate. Remember the name of this chemical—glyphosate—as it is found in just about everything in our food supply. You are about to read the truth about this pervasive chemical, using scientific studies and reports from top experts in the fields of organic, non-Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) and chemical sciences. You will see how disease has increased exponentially since the advent of glyphosate and its use before, during, and after harvest.

    Unbeknownst to the dear souls who are doing all they can to recover from disease and to live without the pain and progression of autoimmunity, this one herbicide may be continuing to affect their health—and the health of the general public at large—in an insidious way. Could the reason they are not having a positive outcome be due to this chemical that is now found in just about everything in our food supply?

    For the past thirty years, I have dedicated my life to helping people live longer, live better, and live forever. I have taught and ascribed to what I call the Natural Medicine Hippocratic Oath: Let food be thy medicine. In the past two to three decades, however, something has slowly eroded the health of America’s population—something I believe that has a lot to do with the food we feed ourselves and our families on a daily basis.

    In the pages of this book, it is my intention to educate you about this. I will present the latest research on this topic and cover the advent of GMOs and how a single herbicide called glyphosate has come to affect virtually everything we eat and even the air we breathe. Billions of dollars are involved in this issue. The health of many millions of people could be at risk.

    The only way to tackle a complicated scientific subject like this one is to draw from the literature being presented in this field by the experts. In order to bring a responsible and credible report on this topic, it must include the consensus of highly specialized scientific researchers. So I sought out the highest-profile people I could find on this subject, people whose lives are committed to discovering the truth about the dangers of genetically engineered foods, the dangers of glyphosate, and the very real danger they both pose to our health. Thankfully, my investigation led me to many highly respected experts who have dedicated their lives to bringing credible awareness to this crisis, and they have been gracious to let me introduce you to their findings. You’ll find them highlighted throughout the book in special From the Expert sections.

    I have written more than a dozen books on natural health in my career, all of them based on research and my thirty years of experience with clients, my family, and myself. I must tell you that I am alarmed at the sharp increase in autoimmunity, cancer, and neurodegenerative and degenerative diseases we have witnessed in those thirty years—years that coincide with the drenching of wheat, corn, and soy fields with glyphosate.

    What has caused us to become so ill in numbers that are gaining more and more attention and rising daily? The staggering numbers were not seen before it became common practice for food crops to be sprayed with a chemical that has been deemed an herbicide with possible carcinogenic effects. There is great debate over the safety of the scientific advances that created this issue, and I am not attempting to settle the debate here. Rather, I am seeking to investigate the link between the use of this chemical and the dramatic upturn in certain diseases.

    I am convinced you need to be made aware of the likely dangers of powerful chemicals that are being sprayed on the crops that all of us ultimately eat. Big corporations should not make all of our decisions for us. Rather, we should have the information we need to make intelligent choices. You deserve to be informed on how to prevent these potentially harmful and disease-causing compounds from invading your body.

    I’ve come to believe my own family and friends have been affected by glyphosate and GMO foods, and I’ll share their stories with you in this book. I’ll also share how I’ve come to believe my health was compromised by these developments. After that, you must decide what you will do with the information.

    You must be proactive in terms of your health. This book is a shocking exposé of what’s going on behind the scenes of our food and agricultural industries. My goal is to lay the case out for you and to let you decide in the court of your mind. I have dug deep into very seedy soil and have found seeds of deception there.     Introduction

    In the past two to three decades, the health of America’s population has slowly eroded. Our food has become totally different from the foods our ancestors ate. It may look and taste the same, but deep inside, it is DNA different. Genetically modified foods, or GMOs (genetically modified organisms), are now in all our supermarkets. In fact, GMO plants and livestock are much more common than non-GMOs.

    The result is that we no longer eat clean food but rather food that has been sprayed with chemicals, particularly the herbicide glyphosate, which are linked to health problems such as inflammation, weight gain, organ disruption, and even cancer. Eating GMO foods can decrease our healthy bacteria and increase the bad bacteria, putting us at risk for leaky gut and candida overgrowth, which can contribute to autoimmune disease.

    The percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses has jumped since the introduction of GMOs in 1996. Food allergies have skyrocketed, and autism, infertility, digestive problems, cancer, autoimmune disease, and other disorders are on the rise. Health watchdog groups are waking up to the danger and tell us not to wait before we start protecting ourselves and our children, who are most at risk.

    This book is not meant to be a biased attack on Monsanto, Bayer AG, DuPont, or any other producer of herbicides, such as glyphosate or the GMO industry. It is intended to be a resource for the reader to become proactive and armed with knowledge.

    My quest to find the answer to my entire family’s health crises can now help you possibly solve your own medical mystery. How Your Food Is Sown and Grown is a compilation of research, personal experience, and real survival tips on how to avoid your exposure to glyphosate and navigate this NEW way that we all have to live when the foods we eat are not necessarily our friends.

    Chapter 1

    Are We Roundup Ready?

    Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. ¹

    What do we do when we can no longer depend on food to be our medicine? Has that day arrived? Are we living in the last days, where the sanctity of our food supply is sidelined for profit?

    In the last thirty years, our foods have, at the level of their DNA, become different from the foods our ancestors ate. Many foods look the same and have a familiar taste, but deep inside, they are radically different.

    How do we know this? Because of a little chemical called glyphosate and how it led to the rise of something you may have heard of—GMOs.

    What Are GMOs?

    GMOs are genetically modified organisms. They are living organisms whose natural genetics have been altered in a laboratory through bioengineering, thus creating an entirely new version of a plant, animal, bacteria, or virus from genes that are not original. These new designer products are intended in this context to improve the farming process, but the question is, are they good for your health? Could the consumption of GMO foods be at the very root of serious diseases that have become widespread today? There have been many objections concerning the development and the commercialization of GMOs in regard to the safety of GM crops and their impact on the environment.

    It may shock you to learn what is being done in the chemical labs of the agricultural industry today. Under the banner of producing higher yields, greater profits, and more efficient harvesting techniques, most grains, corn, soy, processed foods, and meats from today’s farms contain the herbicide glyphosate.

    Glyphosate reaches our food chain through a product used far and wide in the agricultural industry called Roundup. Roundup is an herbicide that, when sprayed on weeds, kills the weeds. It is packaged by a company called Monsanto (who was recently bought out by Bayer AG ), which also produces a Roundup Ready brand of seed that enables farmers to plant, grow, and harvest crops that, through genetic modification, are tolerant to the Roundup weed-killing chemical. ² This means fields can be planted full of Roundup Ready seed, then sprayed with the Roundup weed-killing chemical, all to kill the weeds without killing the crop.

    Through these two products, Roundup and Roundup Ready seeds, Monsanto (Bayer AG) has effectively created a monopoly in the agricultural and food industries with GMOs and glyphosate chemical. These products have revolutionized farming because they have simplified the process dramatically, tremendously reducing expenses and greatly increasing crop yields. Our inheritance from this development in the last thirty years is food that has been changed at the DNA level to tolerate this dangerous herbicide, glyphosate, which is now being linked to serious diseases. Our continual daily consumption of these genetically modified and glyphosate-drenched foods are causing a silent epidemic of chronic unwellness that is baffling the best of diagnosticians.

    With the exception of wheat, nearly all other grains, corn, soy, and cotton are now grown from seed that is genetically modified to be tolerant to Roundup. Just before harvest time, these crops—including wheat—are sprayed with Roundup as a desiccant, which dries them out to make harvesting easier. This technique is known as dry down.

    Since weeds are a huge challenge in farming, GMOs have typically been engineered to be immune to the direct application of this weed-killing chemical. Not only is the genetically modified seed able to withstand glyphosate so the weeds can be killed, but also, this allows for the crops to be saturated with a chemical that we will eventually eat. Now we not only have food that is basically a genetic mutant, but also food that is soaked in a powerful herbicide.

    The scientists who work for the huge agribusinesses that produce GMOs claim they are safe, but how biased are they? Who do they work for?

    This is what I believe is slowly poisoning our population and food supply. This is what I believe is contributing to the epidemic proportions of autoimmunity and higher rates of cancer occurrence and recurrence we see today.

    It’s Everywhere

    Here’s the hard truth. When you buy groceries at the supermarket, it isn’t easy to find foods that are not a product of GMO plants and livestock.

    For example, 94 percent of all soybeans and soy products in the United States (U.S.) are produced from crops that have been genetically modified to be resistant to glyphosate.³ This advanced science does work; it does make the food crop resistant to glyphosate. However, over time, due to the emergence of superweeds, farmers need to increase the amount of the herbicide they use so that it will continue to kill the weeds effectively.⁴ This results not only in genetically modified food products but also greater and greater amounts of health-threatening herbicides, primarily glyphosate, dousing our food.

    What kind of problems does this create for you? Let’s take corn for example. Many U.S. farms grow corn from GMO seed that is, as I mentioned earlier, sprayed pre-harvest with glyphosate as a desiccant to dry it out. Most of the corn is sold for human consumption, but the remainder is used to feed livestock. When fed to livestock, the glyphosate then finds its way into the meat, and ultimately onto our dinner plate also.

    Then we learn that genetically modified corn has been implicated as a source of inflammation, weight gain, and organ malfunction as well as other health problems.⁵ The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) urges health care providers to suggest non-GMO diets for all patients. I believe this is especially true for persons affected by autoimmune disease and cancer. The academy has issued a warning that states, It is biologically plausible for Genetically Modified Foods to cause adverse health effects in humans.

    Another GMO development is the manipulation of seed genetics to cause them to produce their own insecticide. This is accomplished by mixing a plant’s DNA with DNA from bacteria.⁷ This clever invention makes the plant release Bt toxin, which kills insects by destroying the lining of their digestive
