PREFACE
We have a great opportunity and an even greater responsibility. We have the amazing duty to both impact and create history. Growing up reading history books, we might not have thought that we were history-makers. As we perused the pages and learned stories as written about individuals from yesteryear, how often did we consider that we were currently shaping history itself? You see, we were born into a history that was being transcribed about our world, country, state, city, community, and family. A history being penned concerning encounters, events, words spoken or withheld, and the people that shared the experience of those moments. A history that would transcend every culture, every creed, every language, every nation, and unite us into a single historic period.
Can anyone remember where they were on the fateful day of September 11, 2001, that impacted not just American history but world history? Whether we consciously acknowledge it or not, our histories are interlaced. Yes, we are all part of history in its creation and reformation. Although our destinies might be completely different, the ripple effect of my choices can very well touch your world. That is why we must intentionally choose to live as our greatest selves, for it is not simply about our personal decisions but an obligation to our Creator and a respectful accountability to the joint inhabitants of the world we share.
Our lives are meant to matter far beyond the moments we grace this earth. And regardless of our age or stage in life, each of us – as uniquely designed, one-of-a-kind originals – are invaluable to influencing the lives of those we touch. Think about it, you possess something that no one else ever has or ever will. Isn’t that amazing to consider? Are you great as an educator, pilot, bookkeeper, caregiver, orator, mechanic, parent, researcher, singer, plumber, attorney, writer, baker, actor, counselor, farmer, minister, artist, physician, athlete, mentor, designer, scientist, coach, project manager, engineer, administrator, entrepreneur? Whatever our gifting, expertise or strengths, we must ask ourselves, How am I using my unique gifts to benefit, encourage, and equip others? What legacy will I leave for my family? What impact will I have within my profession? What greatness will I inspire within others that will help them shape a better world and history?
We have a great opportunity and an even greater responsibility. We are history-makers and our lives write stories for others to read and learn from.
In the pages that follow, I share some of the histories I was allowed to study through the lives of those God blessed me to encounter. From family members to other impactors, I realized I had been seated with greatness, meaning surrounded by extraordinary history-makers who instilled greatness inside of me. They had embraced and welcomed me to sit at their table by imparting rich lessons, love, and wisdom for me to carry onto the pages of my own historic accounts. By all means, this is not an exhaustive list of the greatness I’ve encountered yet a brief memoir in celebration of being honored to sit amongst it. It is an homage to every person that has touched my life for the better, inspiring me to purposefully live to impart love and greatness in others. It is also an invitation to sit at
