Thanks to Astrolabe Inc [http:www.alabe.com] for use of Solar Fire V7 Gold and AstroAnalyst software to generate astrological and price charts, and to calculate the various dates and periods of the astro-cycles.
The work, wisdom and achievement of numerous devoted astrologers, financial market traders and analysts, Buddhist friends, planetary healers, and people of good will in all walks of life have been the inspiration that has driven this work. I hope that everyone who knows me will recognise the part they have played. Special thanks to Colin Shearing and Elizabeth Plant of Kings Hart Books for their generous and wise guidance through the publishing process.
As always the profoundly kind and tireless persistence of Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche continues to generate hope. Without Rinpoche’s example and my wife Carolyn’s untiring support my ability to offer these ideas would not have been possible and, in many other respects, the value of my life’s endeavours would have been far less.
Important Note
Nearly all experimental studies have been unable to find a statistical relationship between a wide range of isolated astrological concepts and expected outcomes. However, since astrological concepts are interdependently variable, some scientists and most astrologers consider such tests to be inappropriate. Astrology is a symbolic language and offers a balance of probabilities rather than specific certainties. Bear this in mind and seek qualified professional advice for all medical, financial, legal and other specialist questions.

Preface
Watching on television the 9/11 destruction of the twin towers, while knowing the astro-cycles of the time, brought deep foreboding to the minds of contemporary astrologers.
They could see it would need incredible wisdom to avoid breakdown in the United States’ relationships and finances¹. Imminent astro-cycles suggested over-reaching delusions of grandeur. Without wise restraint, political leaders could use the 9/11 events as an excuse to justify imperial adventures based upon misconceived overoptimism². What happened is well known³.
The worst did not have to happen
Particularly sad is that such worst-case scenarios can be avoided. Astrologers are only like Cassandra, cursed with foreknowledge of events that cannot be altered, for as long as they and the astro-cycles are ignored. Humanity has free will, but wise and selfless objectivity is needed to be able to see beyond the knee-jerk mood of the times, and then make proper use of it.
Ironically, those who ignore astro-cycles and insist on their ‘freedom to choose’ are those most likely to be at the mercy of events. Their actions are most predictable. We are especially vulnerable to behaving like this when we are hurt, and strike back automatically. Stopping, taking stock and asking why others acted as they did often clarifies and so heals the most unlikely situations. That many individuals and groups are resistant to doing so is a source of frustration and wonder to anyone who knows how astro-cycles work.
The tragedy of so many post-9/11 deaths and so much destruction, the breakdown of relationships, the waste of vast resources is that most could have been avoided. Those in power should have counselled against fear and revenge; not stirred up immature pride and personal glory. The opposition of Jupiter in Leo to Neptune in Aquarius did not have to be about egocentrically insisting we know best and bombing each other into surrender. This way, agreement never comes. Agreement comes when all sides question their beliefs and notions of self-importance.
Astro-cycles can prevent planning errors
When making economic decisions, considering astro-cycles with understanding and farsighted, positive motivation is equally valuable. By reacting to the cycles automatically with increasingly short-sighted greed, we experience inevitable booms and busts. Clever minds may find ways to distort and avoid the consequences of practical reality for a while. This will only make the correction, when it comes, all the more severe and difficult to understand and act upon.
The economic crisis that broke in 2008 is the result of our seduction and fall into the worst excesses of the astro-cycles of the times. Intrinsic shortcomings in our economic system enabled financial institutions to engage in risky unsustainable trades, driven by greed for personal gain. In the short term, everyone seemed to benefit from their actions. Our system was so unbalanced and fragmented that genuine cause and effect were hardly connected. Although seeming very practical, our 21st century physical world and business relationships are founded upon illusory values; driven more by sentiment, greed and fear than any real facts. Looking with genuine realism, we see they were doomed to fail.
The study that follows uses astro-cycles to explain why this is happening, could have been avoided and certainly can be avoided in the future.
Our reaction to astro-cycles creates our future
What happens in our lives is determined by how we respond to challenges. There are three possible levels. If a traveller meets a brute on the road, he can: surrender to the brute’s will; devise a trick to hide and run away; or he can face and defeat the difficulty once and for all. When applying this analogy to our economic challenges, there are three similar choices. We can protect what we have and blame and attack others, accusing them of causing our problems: join the brute. We can manipulate interest rates, money supply, extend debt, and seek to stimulate consumption in artificial and often unnecessary ways. Some elements of such short-term tricks may be needed to ease the transition to the third option. However, the real solution is to question assumptions that have brought us to similar predicaments for decades, even centuries. The economy is the way we manage material relationships. Because it is material, economic theory must follow the basic laws of physics — nothing is for nothing. Materials may change form, even from energy to mass, but nothing is intrinsically gained or lost.
Blinded by fear and greed, manipulated by pleasing media images of promised emotional and physical gratification, we have lost sight of the obvious. Those in power have misused the astro-cycle determined fashion of the time to manage our desires for their own benefit.
Now the astro-cycles have changed, all is ending in tears. This study uses the cycles to give a much deeper understanding of the past. It then explains those to come. The insight this offers will help us to control our destiny and enjoy a much better future.
Astro-cycles put the economic crisis
