Introduction
If you are a woman running for an elected office, Congratulations!
I support you. Any qualified woman
running for office needs to have her voice heard. Victory can be on the tip of your tongue. Of course, as a woman, you face challenges.
I’m disappointed seeing the way women who dare to speak in public have been treated. After videotaping 16,000 presentations of people from more than 40 countries over the past 4 decades, I’ve become aware of what women have to endure: disrespect, dismissal, labeled as too emotional, not tough enough to lead. Women still hold few executive leadership positions in business and politics in the United States and in most countries.
Women’s voices need to be heard—your voice. In this book, you’ll gain fresh ways to speak up and be heard. Besides tips on giving campaign speeches, creating slogans, media interviews, debates and a special section on doorbelling, I’ll share what’s missing from most advice for women who speak in public: how to use your natural voice professionally. You can sound self-assured and come across as decisive, confident and professional by practicing just one overlooked technique that’s native to spoken English.
I’ve helped people around the world speak wonderfully in public, including successful female candidates, elected officials, a female Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Washington State and even a Miss America finalist. I’ve studied radio and television broadcasting and coached people to appear on national television. I’m also an artist, cartoonist, speech writer, media coach, and college instructor.
I started my speaking career in the pulpit as a Catholic priest in a preaching order. I left the priesthood to marry a lovely woman (I’ve had to learn to listen and I’m still learning) and continued training speakers as an HR specialist and hospital training director. In 1981 I started my business, Applause Associates, and since then I’ve led workshops and coached speakers in America and eight countries, including China and Russia.

How to Explain Your Candidacy in 30 Seconds
I
f you have only 30 seconds,
what would you say to explain your candidacy? For a good campaign ad or a short interview, you’ll want to snag listeners’ attention with your first sentence, mention who you are and why you are running, tell them your vision or plans and ask for their specific support. If you can do this much, you can enlarge this statement into a longer speech. Here are 3 sample 30-second statements, each about 100 words long.
Did you wake up this morning to an alarm clock? If so, you either got right up or hit the snooze button. My name is Karen Peterson. I’m running for congress because I think it’s time we wake up and address
