    Chapter 1

The headaches were getting worse, painkillers stopped working long ago. Sleep was hard to come by, his GP wasn’t helpful. Luke’s wife Lena urged him to try another Doctor. The thought had occurred that he had a serious brain problem. Cancer had already occurred to him. He decided to try his GP again. An appointment was made but he never kept it, he collapsed instead.

In A&E he was put on oxygen and a heart monitor. X rays were taken along with bloods. His pulse rate was up as was his heart beat but not that much. His collapse, and whatever caused it, wasn’t due to those.

The X-rays didn’t show anything to explain this, but rapid eye movement similar to someone dreaming was noted along with heavy sweating. What could this be? Wires to a brain monitor were attached, and that’s when the shock hit the attending doctor, What in God’s name is this? The monitor was going ballistic, looking more like a Seismograph than a brain wave pattern.

The attending doctor was out of his depth with this and was happy to ask for help. The neurological specialist on call was summoned. Mr Wright was in the hospital finishing up on a meeting with his contemporaries when his buzzer went off. In A&E Luke Johnson was having a bad time and getting worse, his scan was getting faster as were his eye movements. Before Mr Wright got there the monitor alarm started up. It caught everyone by surprise as no one in the room had ever remembered hearing one of them go off before. Mr Wright heard it while in the corridor and immediately ran for all he was worth, he had heard this before, but that was a long time ago.

He lost that patient. While all hell was breaking loose, he ordered up a crash cart while running, grabbing as he went a coma inducing drug.

5cc were quickly inserted as a nurse was told to turn off the alarm.

Luke Johnson rapidly went into a coma. The attending doctor quickly brought Mr Wright up to speed on the patient. Where’s his wife? was all he asked next.

Lena Johnson heard all the commotion and was in a panic, what’s wrong with Luke? She kept saying over and over. Mrs Johnson, I’m Mr Wright he said. We need to run tests on your husband and I need to talk to you, can we do that? Without hesitation, she agreed.

A CAT scan was ordered as he took her into an office. She was in her mid-30s like Luke, and taught English at the local high school. Mrs Johnson, we need to know all you can tell us about your husband. Is there any history in the family that might give us any clue as to what might be wrong He explained that Luke’s problem had him baffled, but he lied.

The Johnson’s were an ordinary couple with two young children still in primary school. Luke worked as a fireman and none of them had ever been seriously ill before. Then she told him that for the past 12 months Luke had been getting headaches for which their GP prescribed pain killers and the last one was Tramadol, but it didn’t help much.

Alarmed that such a strong painkiller wasn’t much good only made him more anxious and he quietly prayed he wasn’t going to lose another patient like the last one.

Nothing gave him a clue as to what was wrong. He decided he needed to talk to a colleague and he knew who that should be.

Peter Johnston woke with a start at the phone ringing. Peter its Jim Wright; I need to see you as soon as we can meet.

Jim what’s this all about, I retired last year remember.

I know Peter, but I’ve got another case like Ian Smith, remember him? These words were going to take him to a place he could never have seen coming.

Oh shit, was what he heard, yeah I know, he replied. Neither of them would forget seeing a man’s brain turn to mush before, at least not that hadn’t been involved in a car accident, giving all who saw it sleepless nights for a long time.

I’ll be there in 5 hours, that’s the best I can do

It will have to be Peter; by the way I put the patient into a coma to stop the symptoms we saw before.

Good, that should buy us some time Jim. See you soon. With that he got up and dressed. Living on his own meant he had no one to explain to, he thought. That was what ruined his marriage, but he hoped now he could work to repair that, now that he was retired. Nobody would believe that the answer to Mr Wright’s question was going to come from across the world in Puerto Rico, or to be more accurate, more than one place. Add England, Australia and West Virginia to the list, with confirmation from all the others. Lives were about to get interesting.

    Chapter 2

The night shift in the Radio Astronomy at Lovell was a pig of a shift. Little staff, and then mostly by those newly passed their exams. Joe Lindsay wasn’t a happy man that night, but things that Joe could only dream about were about to change. A problem at a London hospital was about to be solved.

Peter Johnston arrived in St. Margaret’s after crossing Westminster

Bridge, which was quiet this early so he made good time. He met up with Jim as he was on his way to talk to Lena Johnson.

Mrs Johnson is there anything, anything at all you can tell us about Luke Peter asked after the introductions were over. I have thought of nothing else she said I have no idea what is wrong apart from those damn headaches.

OK, Jim said, then tell us anything about Luke, a hobby, his likes, dislikes anything that comes to mind no matter how silly it may seem, can you do that?

So Lena started, she was very afraid of what might happen to Luke. After telling them for what seemed like hours, she happened to say that Luke had a very high I.Q which put him into the top 1 per cent in the world with a score of 165, and he would sometimes give her an answer before she had asked the question which infuriated her, to his amusement. She also told him how Luke was a gifted pianist, and in his spare time taught music in the local Polytechnic. They thanked her and told her to get some rest as Luke would be kept here for some time. Besides, she had two kids to see too. They would be worried, she thought. Can I come back later? Yes after you get some rest Peter replied.

Still no nearer to any answers they went to see their now joint patient as they had agreed silently.

Luke Johnson had to be taken out of his induced coma slowly; and they weren’t sure what would happen.

He was fully wired up to the monitor, as they read the scan results.

Hold on why is there two sets?

Peter Johnston called the Technician in the scan room.

Dave its Peter, why did you do two scans?

Peter I was wondering when you would call, the first one looked odd, but the second only confused me more. Can you see the differences?

Yeah Dave but I’m not sure what it means.get back to you

The two scans were so unalike they could have been two different people.

Joe Lindsay was on his second cup of tea when the call came, Joe you need to see this now the voice on the line was Helen, one of the newbies. Grabbing the cup Joe walked the two doors down the corridor to the control room. The screens all showed the same thing, a big goddam flare where a flare had no right to be. Quick check the readings Joe shouted, to nobody in particular. It’s still the same Helen confirmed. Get me Arecibo, then call Tom Cameron, NOW They all jumped, as Joe never shouted to anybody ever.

Tom, it’s Joe, I need you here now, got a call going through to Miguel at Arecibo I need you in on this, get here soonest, ok.

On my way Joe, be there about an hour.

Joe said Helen Miguel on the end, hold Miguel he’s just coming

Mick, you got what I’ve got

Joe you better believe it, but I don’t know yet what I’ve got. What readings do you get? I don’t Mick, it’s off the scale. You?

Me too Joe. Wait it’s starting to come down, very slowly.

How long has it been like this Helen? Shouts Joe, How long has it been now? 15 minutes she said. Mick we need to triangulate, what do you get?

Hang on Joe, 25deg North 17 minutes East, Inclination 13% Joe heard. Mick confirm, confirm he said with some urgency.

Confirm Joe, send me your readings

Sending now Mick Can’t be, the both thought at once, this puts it in our system just inside Pluto. Joe what have we got here? asked Miguel, damned if I know replied Joe.

Joe where’s the Hubble right now

"Shit Mick, yes call them now will you, I’ll bring Tom up to speed

    when he gets here."

    Chapter 3

Doctors Jim Wright and Peter Johnston had to bring the patient out if his coma, they had to find more. They had to save this one. Slowly they reduced the strength of the drug, as they kept their eyes on the monitor. Luke Johnson started to stir, but the monitor stayed normal, slowly the drug was switched off.

Both of the Doctors were very nervous and ready to turn up the dose at any sign of distress, but it seemed alright. Slowly Mr Johnson opened his eyes. And then he smiled. Astonished by this sudden turn of events, Dr Wright checked all the leads as the scan showed normal where before it was going off the scale.

Mr Johnson, do you know where you are? asked Dr Johnston.

    Yes, I’m in a hospital.

Do you know why you’re here? Dr Wright asked.

Yes and call me Luke, too many Johnson’s around here. He joked. What can you tell us? Peter asked.

Well I don’t know if you can believe this, but I’m alright now he’s here.

    Who’s here? Dr Johnston asked.

Please don’t think I’m crazy, but if you have an open mind I can tell you why all this happened, can you explain the scan?

This wasn’t a statement but a question. Of course they couldn’t.

This has happened before hasn’t it, was the question. Johnston and Wright looked at each other not knowing how to answer. Luke beat them to it, I know what happened the last time. He paused before going on. He is very sorry it didn’t work then. He did not know it would happen.

Christ! He’s talking about something that happened years go, but that’s impossible. Their eyes caught each other with the same thought.

No its not Luke said. What’s not? asked Dr Wright.

What you both just thought He heard.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you, but if you listen I can explain

Shock would be too mild a word to describe how they felt right now.

Ed, its Mick at Arecibo, where are you pointing right now?

"What kept you Mick, we got a flash as we were turning north for

our next sequence when we got it. We had to do a quick focus, as you know we close the lid when turning so this caught us out."

Ed I’ve got Joe on the other line He didn’t have to explain who Joe was, everyone knew everyone else in astronomy, optical or otherwise.

Ok we’ve got a burst of visible and infra-red light on the plane of Pluto and Uranus, but its vanishing quickly. We are getting all the wavelengths it’s all recording on HD digital.

This will take some analysis, he didn’t need to voice.

"Ed its Joe, we need to cooperate on this, we’re off the scale here,

and so is Mick. Tom is due in very soon you’d better get everyone you can in on this. Anything quick you can add?"

Well Joe it’s too early, but we got a movement across the plane of Uranus that we weren’t expecting, but it will need more study

.Understood Ed was the reply. Keep us in the loop and we’ll do the same. Will get back to you The link closed.

Shit! What does that mean? Mick and Joe both thought even though they were both half the world apart.

Tom Cameron arrived at Lovell earlier than he thought. He met Joe immediately on arrival and was brought up to speed. Joe who else did you contact? Only Miguel was the reply. Get onto Green Bank and Narrabri now, we need everyone in on this, he turned to Helen set this up please Helen and give them our, and Arecibo’s data. Joe we need triangulation to see what we’ve got here.

A voice said Tom, Mary at NAIC is on the phone. That got his attention. Mary, Tom I’m putting you on speaker, what have you got?

Tom we’re analysing data from all over and I mean everyone is getting the signal. We have had one big energy burst between Pluto and Uranus, and I mean in empty space not on one of the planets.

It’s too big for asteroids colliding, but yet we can’t be sure what happened. Tom knew NAIC had the best computer analysing equipment on the planet, and answers will come but he was frustrated as hell trying to come up with a logical answer. Mary, get the take from Hubble, Ed’s got photos that might help.

Will do Tom, lots of people at my side of the pond are going to miss dinner tonight, I’ve called everyone back.

Thanks Mary, we’re not expecting to sleep any time soon either, keep an open line, talk soon. Things were moving fast, too fast to take in what we are getting, because this did not make sense. What could cause an explosion that would produce the energy levels on Radio and the Visible Spectrum that they were getting? These levels were on a scale that to all intents were beyond anything seen before apart from a supernova. But there was no supernova near Pluto, the fact they were still alive proves that.

    Chapter 4

I ’m not the only one this has happened too, said Luke Johnson. Put my case on your Intranet and you will find there are more out there who are going through this. He went on. We’ve all experienced the same thing and you will find, if you dig, we all have very high IQ’s. That’s the key.

Both Dr’s sat down to listen to a man who, about 3 days ago had a brain scanner going ballistic and who shouldn’t by all accounts be sitting up in bed talking normally if somewhat confusingly. Luke went on, He should be here in about 6 days or so. He is probably the wrong term, truth be told I don’t know what gender he is.

Dr Wright thought he’s not making sense; this must be a side effect of all that pressure we read on the scans. I can see you think I’m crazy, well don’t you? said Luke. The silence could be cut with a knife. The name of him/it/she is, as best as I can tell Daganhoyt.

I know this sounds very fantastic, but Dr Wright, isn’t your sister Mary married to Tom Cameron at Lovell?

How could you possibly know that? The dumbfounded Dr Wright asked. You have no way of knowing me or my family

Call him and tell him I know about the energy burst near Pluto and the object seen by the Hubble. I know things I have no right to know, and I know Tom Cameron is trying to make sense of what he sees on his monitors and what he is being told by his colleagues. Try him, what have you got to lose? Ask him if anything happened near Pluto and see what he says, I promise you he will be asking you questions. I hope you can give him answers.

Now why should I call my brother-in-law with such a fantastic tale even I have problems with?

Dr Wright asked, how can I convince him you are not some crazy person? A long pause before Luke Johnson broke the silence, If I can tell him something I couldn’t possibly know, will he at least hear me out?

The scientist in Dr Wright had to know answers to problems, it was in his nature to solve problems and this one was a cracker. This puzzle would bother him until he found the answer, he felt he had to call Tom no matter how stupid this all sounded and he knew, or hoped, Tom would listen.

Tom its Jim can you talk? Tom Cameron thought what the hell does Jim want, could he not wait till tonight at dinner, damn.

Jim I’m quite busy, can this wait?

Tom just a question, have you got something out near Pluto you can’t explain? Tom, Tom can you hear me? By now Tom Cameron’s eyes were nearly popping out his head. What was that you said Jim?" Tom tried to control his voice, without success. Those around him saw the look on his face and immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion. Joe Lindsay standing next to Tom caught the inflection in his voice and the look on his face; his first thought was Jim is Mary’s brother, what’s happened to her. Joe was about to ask if he was ok when Tom raised his hand to stop the question from Joe.

Jim repeat what you said, it’s a bit noisy here.

Tom have you got a puzzle near Pluto and did the Hubble catch something crossing Uranus?

Jim knew all about Tom’s work and how he knew most of the people in the Astronomy field; if there was anything there Tom would be one of the first to know.

Why are you calling with this Jim?

Tom was trying hard to get his voice under control, with some success.

Tom this sound silly but I have a patient who says he knows what it is, I know it’s crazy but he knows about you and Mary and what you do and where you work. He wants you to ask him a question he could not possibly know the answer to. It’s a test if you like, if he can answer it, he is asking you to hear him out. Does this sound as crazy to you as it does to me?

Jim can I call you back? Tom asked with all his nerves jangling. Sure Tom, he heard.

Joe looked over at Tom clearly worried his friend had just lost his wife, not knowing he was about to hear something that would make him want to sit down before he fell down with shock.

    Chapter 5

Luke and Lena Johnson were alone and he could see his wife was worried, "Lena will you trust me when I tell you
