Messages to our Children is born out of love. Alberta Lampkins is a gentle lamb, whose giving spirit lends itself to the many causes for which she advocates in an effort to inspire life, love, friendship and kinship. She has paved the way for open and honest dialogue, as each contributor to this project provides an open window to human reality. Whether it is a poem, a collection of thoughts, or a letter addressed to a love one, Messages to our Children will make you reach into your own soul and take a long, overdue assessment of your own life’s journey.
It is with great pride that I pen this message. Alberta Lampkins is a true friend, one I hold in high esteem. I value our kindred spirits as literary deliverers of the written word, and I wish her well in all of her endeavors and accomplishments.
If you take anything from the literary pieces found on the pages between the covers of this book, know that these are truths—the heart and soul of those who’ve shared their joy and pain, accomplishments and failures, and words of encouragement with the ones they love.

Introduction Letter
In the year 2005, my mother, Macieon Hairston, took ill and came to live with me in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Her health declined and she asked me to get her a composition book. She wanted to start writing messages to her grandchildren. I obliged her and got the notebook. However, before she could write a single word, we lost her on December 22, 2005. Her words went unwritten.
So, it is in her honor that I started this book project. May the words you have to say to your children, grandchildren, niece, nephew, godchildren or any child connected to you, never go unsaid or unwritten. May you find a moment to write your own message.
I am humbled and truly grateful to each author in this project. Peace and many blessings to each of you and to all who read our words.

Introduction
Every person has their own definition, thought or idea of what a family means to them. Merriam Webster defines a family as a group of related people including people who lived in the past. However, family means much more than just that. A family consists of people who share common values, goals, experiences, activities, hobbies, emotional and spiritual connections. These relationships are not always genetic.
Social connections and relationships come from many sources: friends, neighbors, teachers, military, co-workers, church family and much more. Any of these sources can be a valuable asset in our lives. Belonging to a group or a family gives us a sense of identity. It helps us understand who we are and feel part of something larger than ourselves. Social connections are in essence, a circle of support and important for everyone regardless of age or life stage.
A family at its best helps to bring about peace, joy, harmony, and strength to each other. In family, we find an abundant source of traditions, beliefs and values. People of all backgrounds, cultures and religion make up the foundations of a family. And though we all may be uniquely diverse, the common thread is that family is the strongest and most valuable time
