AFTER LATCHING THE toilet stall door, Winnie Osler lowered the toilet bowl's lid and sat on it. At first, hot tears trickled down. Then the sobbing began. Once started it wouldn't stop. She couldn't help it. When she heard someone outside pushing open the bathroom door, she didn't care who it was.

Winnie? Someone called out. Are you all right?

It was Tara Winston, always working late too, past seven o'clock. Winnie glanced at her wristwatch. It showed half past seven.

She stopped sobbing, sucked in a deep breath, stood, unlatched the door, and stepped out. Tara was at a sink, busy. Winnie went over to a sink beside Tara, muttering a soft hello. She looked in the mirror. Her makeup had run. She had to wash it all off.

Here, you'll need this, Tara said, handing over a packet of makeup remover towelettes.

She thanked Tara and began cleaning.

I know you're hurting, Tara said when she handed the packet back.

Winnie pretended she didn't hear what Tara had just said. Talking with Tara about Frank Buford wasn't an option. It was a personal problem. Thankfully, Tara didn't press further. Tara was always so cool, always responding well to others, knowing when not to pry. She would know how to handle this situation. Thinking about Frank, she started sobbing again.

Shutting her eyes for a brief moment, she felt Tara's touch, and fell into a comforting embrace. She held on until the sobs subsided.
