    IDENTITY

    Heavenly Labels

    But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

    1 Peter 2:9

    It would not be a particularly happy thought experiment, but should I wish to recall the many labels that have been applied to me over the years, there are plenty to choose from. I have been identified as all kinds of things – precocious, a disappointment, too loud, not serious enough, too serious, unexpectedly short (a recurring theme) and many more besides. People say odd things, don’t they? Once, after speaking in front of thousands of people one helpful lady came to tell me how nice it was to have a mumsy-type speaker with a proper muffin-top, as opposed to these young skinny things. Now I know what she meant, but golly . . .

    The reality is we are not as bad as our fiercest critic would lead us to believe, and we are not as fabulous as our biggest compliment suggests either. We are not called to either pessimism or narcissism as Christians; having an identity that is built on who we are in Christ means avoiding the extremes of self-degradation or self-aggrandisement. We are defined by Jesus, who knows us, loves us and gave everything for us; we are secure because we are God’s ‘special possession’.

    As you begin this 40-day journey, and this section on identity, why not take a moment to thank God again that he has brought you out of darkness into the light. Those labels that perhaps you were once given have now been scrubbed clean and written over with God’s own handwriting. Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection mean you are a new creation. You are forgiven and you are set free. God sees you perfectly and he sees your potential. You are his precious child; he delights in you. What a heavenly
