About this ebook

Have the grace to live righteously.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

When you answer the calling to step out of the traditional role of church membership to serve beyond the walls of a physical structure, it is because you understand that church is not the only way to serve people directly. As God sends you out to minister to His people, He will equip you with what you need on the journey to live as Christ Jesus and His disciples did. Don’t let fear hold you in bondage from answering His call. He has already prepared you.

    Ministering Without Walls - Vagsta

    Ministering Begins at Home

What I know now is partial and incomplete.

    —Anonymous

It was as cold as it could be in Augusta, Georgia—a freezing sixty-seven degrees. My mom was pacing in the kitchen, opening and closing cabinet doors, glasses on the edge of her nose. Her head went up and down as she looked from the top shelf to the bottom shelf. Then she started reaching inside and turning cans and containers around, reading each label while making sounds of content and discontent. She dug into the pocket on her apron and quickly jotted down something on a piece of paper torn from my cornbread paper tablet. She took a quick visit to the refrigerator and itemized it rack by rack. Picking up a stick of butter, she squeezed her eyebrows together and lifted her chin upward toward her lower lip. Closing the door quietly was her signal that she was all done. Down she sat, and out came more paper, more figuring, and more sounds. She raised the pencil to her head and tapped it a couple of times as if the solution lay inside and she was trying to get it out. I sat there in anticipation of the final decision. Quiet. Patient. But then I heard birds chirping in the distance and went over to the window to see them. They were red birds with feathers so deeply stained in red ink that they appeared to be wet. I remember thinking, I’ll never forget this day. I tried to capture everything about it in my mind: the weather, the color of the sky, the breeze bending the remaining leaves on the trees and rolling the parachuted leaves on the ground, the gray tin fence that separated our property from our neighbors, and the silence of an early Saturday
