    Home

    My day’s work is done.

I leave the cold discomfort of suburbia

and point my car toward the welcoming hills.

    Traffic subsides

and the skyline opens above me

as the landscape lays out a welcome mat

    I’m heading home,

creating distance between the grey and green,

pretending it’s for the last time.

    I feel enveloped,

drawn, like a mother draws a sleepy child

into the fold of her comforting arms.

    Tonight I will savour

    the silence of my retreat,

till the dawn calls me back again.

    This Old House

    My house believes

    it’s still 1983

and although she wears the era well,

    it’s easy to tell

she is growing more stubborn with age

    In no hurry to change,

    she rests comfortably

in her pine-bark and gravel bed,

    like a Buddhist sage

    Resplendent in cream-coloured fibro

complimented by a red tin roof

    that has weathered more

    than a few storms

    since her youth

    Her modest front room

    boasts green ivy walls

    that sprout from earth-coloured floors

    and wind their way upward

    around windows and doors

    to a once-white ceiling

    The kitchen – her heart

    shines warm

    with Laminex in lime green

    perfectly preserved

    under layers of Mr Sheen

    Her varnished chipboard

    doors and drawers

    edged with mismatched tile

    echo days when cost

    was more important than style

    In her bathroom she sports

    a fetching striped curtain

with a touch of faux chrome

    to add a little bling

    but here’s the thing…

    Despite her questionable style

she is a proud old girl

    happy to share

    glimpses of her past;

    snippets of the lives lived
