    Nick's Fury - Dani Gray

    Chapter One

Nick Simmons was not having a good day. First, he spilled coffee on his favorite shirt while he was driving to the office, then once he gets into said office, he finds out that all the clean shirts he would keep there were all dirty and he forgot to get them cleaned.

Or rather, his assistant was supposed to get them sent out for dry cleaning and didn’t get that done, on top of a bunch of other stuff. Looks like he was going to need a new assistant. This would be the sixth one in three weeks. Why did Allison have to get married?

Okay, he was happy for her, but damn it, he just wanted someone who could do as good a job as she could. Was that too much to ask for?

Oh, shit. Nick heard, at the same time as the sound of something hitting the floor and breaking. Giving his head a shake, Nick moved to go open his office door.

There on the ground was the monitor that once sat on the desk of the person who worked outside of Nick’s office.

Shelly looked up at him, tears in her eyes, knowing that this was the end of her time in his office. Let me clean up my mess, and I’ll get my stuff and go.

I’m sorry, but we both know this isn’t working.

I know. Thank you for giving me a chance.

Nick went back into his office, but left the door open, and started to gather his stuff up as well. No sense in his staying either since he refused to spend the day in a wet and stained shirt. Making sure he had his laptop and papers in his bag, he went and gathered his dirty shirts that needed to go to the dry cleaners. Glad he never bothered with ties, he didn’t have to worry about keeping those clean. Besides, he never could knot the damn things properly.

Once he had everything in hand, Nick moved to the door, closing it and made sure it was locked behind him. He looked over to see that Shelly was dealing with a courier person, who was dropping off a box.

Waiting until the courier left, he turned to Shelly. You ready?

I am, where should I leave the box?

Leave it on the desk. I’ll get it later. I need to run to the dry cleaners and go home to get a clean shirt. The lid on my coffee popped off this morning, so I need to get changed.

And I didn’t get your shirts done. Shelly gave him a regretful look. I’m sorry, I really did screw it all up on you.

It’s all good, and I hope that you find the place you fit at.

Thank you, I do appreciate that.

After she dropped the package on the desk, she grabbed her bag and they left together, and she made sure that the door automatically locked when they left.

Take care of yourself. Nick told her.

    You as well.

Nick waited a moment, watching as she walked down the street and turned the corner and moved out of his sight. He went to his car and once he unlocked it, put his shirts in the back seat with his bag. He had just shut the door when there was the sound of an explosion and he was knocked off his feet.

Not sure how much time passed, Nick slowly became aware of people running around, the sounds of alarms, and then Shelly was beside him, brushing bits of broken glass and debris off him, and helped him to stand up.

Oh my god, she cried. Are you okay?

I’m not sure. Nick coughed. What happened?

    Your office blew up.

    What?

Your office blew up. She turned and pointed back at the building they both used to work in. Look.

Nick turned and his jaw dropped at the destruction that was once his office. Fire was raging in the now blown out windows and he knew that if they had still been in the office when that bomb went off, they would not be alive.

Turning to look at Shelly, Nick gently took her hand in his. I need you to go home and find another job. Stay away from here, and don’t come back.

    What aren’t you saying?

Nick was surprised at what Shelly caught on to what he didn’t say. That I can’t tell you, but for now, go home and stay safe.

Giving him a lingering look, Shelly reached down and grabbed her stuff. You take care of yourself and call me later if you still need an assistant. Somehow I think you being able to find someone just got a lot harder.

Nick watched as she once again walked away, but he was pretty sure that she was right about how much harder it was going to be for him to find a new assistant. Who the hell had done this, and why?

Hearing the sounds of sirens, Nick knew that he needed to make some phone calls.

Reaching into his pocket, Nick grabbed his cell and called Scott.

Listen, I don’t know if anyone has called you yet, but someone just blew up my office. I’m fine, but my office is gone. I wanted to call to let you know that I’m okay, but that I’ll be making some calls to make sure that everyone at the house will be safe.

Do you think this has anything to do with my family?

I don’t know, but until we do, let’s not borrow trouble.

Okay, I’ll let Bobby know so we can keep Lexi safe too.

I’ll let you know more later when I get home, I simply wanted to let you know that I’m okay.

Nick hung up the phone, then scrolled until he got to a specific name, and held the phone to his ear.

Hey, it’s Nick. I’ve got a code red on my hands. Someone just blew my office up.

    Chapter Two

Captain Lawrence Temple was about to enjoy a nice cup of coffee when his phone rang, and it was the phone that he didn’t like to ring, since it was the one that meant trouble.

What. He barked into it, uncaring who was on the other end of the line.

Sir, a bomb was detonated this morning at approximately eight forty-five in the offices of one Nicholas Simmons, a CPA who does general accounting.

Larry sat up straight in his chair. Was anyone hurt?

No sir, Mr. Simmons and his assistant had stepped out of the offices moments earlier and had left the premises. The blast was designed to destroy the office of Mr. Simmons only, but the fire damaged the buildings on both sides.

    "Keep me updated.

    Yes, sir.

As soon as he hung up the phone, Larry reached for his cell and called his pain in the ass brother.

What can you tell me about the bomb in Nick’s office? He asked Tyler.

    Hello to you too, brother.

Yeah, hello. Larry snapped at Tyler. Now, about the bomb?

Looks like a courier delivered a package to the offices right before they left, he didn’t look at who it was from. Nick was going to go back to the office this afternoon and check it out.

    Did the assistant?

No, she had been new, and has already been let go prior to this happening.

Could she have been part of it?

No, we’ve already checked her out and she’s clean.

What’s your take on this? Could this be about Scott’s family or something to do this Nick’s business?

Tyler let out a low growl, If it’s something to do with Nick, we might have a problem, since he’s the money man for us. He looks after all our financials, both for us as a group and for everyone individually. If it’s Scott’s family, I’m not sure how, since they’re all rotting in jail.

Who else does Nick work for?

Scott and a few other friends, all of whom have been cleared by us. With the sensitive nature of what we do, Nick knows that he has to be cautious in who he takes on as clients. He keeps no paperwork at the office and carries his laptop with him. He also keeps all his information on a server that is locked up tight, one of our IT set it up and confirmed that it’s secure.

Has anyone tried to hack it?

Fuck, Tyler swore, and yelled for someone named Jones, telling him to check to see if anyone tried to hack the system, specifically Nick’s stuff. He’s going to check, but it will be a bit.

Do you have anyone who can look after Nick and the house?

I can send a couple of guys to look after the house, but Nick will turn down the protection. Tyler sighed. He’s a stubborn asshole, and if we try to put someone on him, he’ll raise hell. Besides, we’ve got an assignment coming up that I need everyone on the team. Those I’m sending to cover the house are on light duties. I really wish I had been able to spare at least one of the guys, but I need all hands on deck for the mission we were handed. I can have Jones help out, but it will only be remotely.

Meaning they were injured and can’t be mobile.

Yeah, that’s why they’d be good for housesitting, but not protection of a mobile target.

What about if Nick simply keeps his ass at home? Larry growled out. At least he’ll be protected there.

Tyler laughed, the fucker just laughed when Larry said that. Good luck with that. Nick does what Nick wants to do. I don’t even get to tell him what the fuck to do, he’ll never follow my orders.

    He’ll follow mine.

Let me know how that goes. I’m sure that the guy you’re all hot and bothered about is really going to listen to you since you’re behaving like a third grader hitting on your crush. When are you going to grow a pair and ask him out? Tyler hung up the phone while snickering.

Larry got up from his desk and headed out the door, letting his assistant know that he was leaving the office and could be reached on his cell if anyone needed him.

Going down to his car, he headed to the site of the bombing. As soon as he got there, he asked where Nick was. When he was told that he had turned down going to the hospital, Larry turned to where
