The Fasting Way - Mailly Santos

    Introduction

Fasting is not an alien terminology as it has been extensively discussed by several great thinkers and philosophers like Hippocrates, Aristotle, Plato, among others, as well as in the holy books of some of the world’s well-known religions. They all spoke highly of the effectiveness of intermittent fasting. They preached about applying fasting to heal the sick instead of using medications.

Ever wonder why food is always the last thing on your mind when you are sick? It’s simply nature playing the role of a physician to induce the healing process. It’s no wonder that Hippocrates said, Eating while sick is like giving fuel to the raging sickness within you.

Some people have this misconception that fasting is synonymous with starvation. They couldn’t have been more wrong. They fail to recall that starvation is a situation whereby you have no access to food or have no control over your daily bread.

It’s completely out of your hands. You have no idea of when and how to get your next meal. So, you not eating at that period is not by choice. All of these are a direct contrast to fasting. Here, you willingly stay-off food for a period to achieve a particular target; whether healthwise, religious, or for other reasons.

Fasting periods vary from one individual to another. So also does the purpose. Even now, it is widely accepted by many that fasting is simply the best self-restoring medication for the human body. Fasting offers a variety of health benefits, most of which result from the availability of ketones in the body. It is known to purify the body and soul and is a strategy that people have been utilizing for over 1,000 years.

Practically all the religions and societies on the planet align with and preach fasting in one way or another. Hippocrates, the antiquated Greek scholar, referenced fasting as the best medication to cure oneself of ill-health. He said – All illness starts in the gut.

Those people who were used to fasting back then didn’t even know that fasting has been placing their bodies in ketosis! A body system in a ketogenic state is the best organic anticonvulsant drug one can ever procure. Fasting can cut down the recurrence of seizures in epileptic patients. However, nonstop fasting is not conceivable, particularly in epileptic children. That is the point at which the doctors at Mayo clinic saw the relationship between fasting and a low-carb diet. The doctors saw that the epileptic seizures had decreased in recurrence.

An exacting low-carb diet has a similar impact as fasting in the management of convulsion. The moment researchers discovered an approach to quantify the blood ketone levels; they were able to confirm the relationship between fasting and the keto diet. By the mid-1900s, they understood that fasting prompted the synthesis of ketone in the body. Before long clinical specialists started utilizing the low-carb, high-fat eating regimen to treat epilepsy in both the young ones and grown-ups.

A question that has been asked by many individuals trying to shed some weight has always been When should I eat? Fortunately, fasting has provided an answer to this question. We no longer have to continuously bug our minds on how to shed fat. We no longer
