    Glitter Mountain - Saundra Ryherd

    CHAPTER ONE

In a faraway mountain lived a magical fairy named Sheila. She was a very wise and powerful fairy. She had great magic that protected fairies and Pegasus. There came a day on Pegasus Mountain, that her magic was tested. The great wizard Duane had attacked the Pegasus, killing as many as he could. With the help of Cassaundra, who was the Queen of fairies, and Katrina who was a new fairy from Mystical Mountain, they defeated the wizard. Sheila had to find out why the wizard, who was normally friendly, decided to attack the mountain.  She decided to ask her dear friends David and Larry, why such a thing had happened. She had been friends with the two wizards for many years.

Sheila arrived in the small village of Arbury where the wizard’s lived. She found the castle of the wizards. It was a small castle with vines climbing the walls.  There was a cobble stone walk up to the front entrance, with beautiful flowers on each side. She could smell the sweet aroma of all the different kinds of flowers. The door was green with a small window way up high. There was a big brass ring on the door for knocking.  She being a fairy, of course, was too small for using such a thing. She flew up to the small window where she found a smaller ring made for small fairies. She gently pulled it back and knocked on the massive door. Amazingly it rang out a loud tune that rang throughout the castle.

Immediately, the small door in the window opened, showing a very large eye looking back at her. Larry saw who was there and opened the door to let Sheila inside. Queen Sheila, what are you doing so far from home? Sorry, I am really glad to see you. It just isn’t that often that you actually come here to visit. David isn’t home at the moment. Come in to the parlor dear queen, we will have a visit until he returns.

Sheila gladly accepted the invitation and headed for the parlor. She found many very large comfortable chairs in red and tan. The fireplace was made of stone and brick. He had a fire burning with green and blue flames, proving that it was a wizard’s fire. The drapes on the massive windows were green velvet, with satin edges. There was a small table sitting in front of the window. Sitting on top of the table was two tea sets. One was tiny for fairies; the other was larger for the wizards. To Sheila, the room looked so very large. She had never been to visit the wizard’s home; they had always come to see her. She saw a beautiful green velvet chair just her own size. She then, waited for Larry to return from the kitchen. He had made her tea with a tiny tea set. She giggled at the way he was doing his best to accommodate her.

Larry, I have come to see you and David on an urgent matter. I can ask you my questions before David gets back, or we can wait. We have had a problem with a wizard, named Duane.

Let’s wait for David to return, so that you won’t have to repeat everything you say. We can just visit for a few minutes. He should have been back a while ago, I’m not sure where he could have gone.

Okay Larry, we will give him a while longer. I just don’t want to stay away too long. I’m not sure that all is still well on Pegasus Mountain.

Sheila and Larry talked about how the weather had been there in the village, as well as, how it had been on the mountain. The longer she waited, the more nervous she felt. She didn’t want to be rude to Larry; she was just very concerned for her Pegasus and fairies. An hour had passed by, without any sign of David. Sheila was seriously thinking about giving up on the wizards and heading back home. Finally, she heard the door opening and closing.

David immediately headed for the parlor, hearing voices. Queen Sheila, how wonderful it is to see you, once again. How have you been dear? It has been a very long time since we’ve seen you. Seems like we always have something serious to do these days. What have you come for, or is this just a friendly visit?

Hello David. Sad to say, I have come to inquire about a wizard. His name is Duane; I think that is what he told the Pegasus. He came to Pegasus Mountain and began casting spells all over the mountain. He has killed and hurt many of the Pegasus and some of the fairies were hurt as well. I’m wondering if you know of this particular wizard? The wizards have always been our friends, almost family. I just don’t understand why he has done such evil.

I have heard of this Duane, began David. When he was a small child, he was banned from wizard school. He was dabbling in black magic and they refused to let him use it there. I heard that he had redeemed himself though and returned to school. He supposedly turned out to be a great wizard, doing wonderful things during his years in school. I just can’t imagine why he would have changed back to black magic. David looked at Larry, to see if he knew any more about Duane.

I heard that there was a wizard who visited a witch, said Larry. I heard that they first met in some public establishment in the town of Canary. I am curious if he was enchanted by the witch. I wouldn’t think that a wizard would be fooled by a witch. Her name was ... um Meranda, I think. Of course, dear Sheila, this is all just gossip from townsfolk. What happened to Duane? Is he still on Pegasus Mountain causing havoc?

No, he went to Mystical Mountain, where a few of my fairies finally caught up with him. He actually, turned himself into a rabbit, to trap a Pegasus that he thought he had enchanted with obedience. They managed to put him to sleep and put him in a magical cage. Antaysha has him at her castle for now. We aren’t sure what to do with him. As for Meranda, she came to the mountain as well. Antaysha took her magic away from her for good and made her a mortal. I just had to see, if either of you knew anything about the wizard. Or, if you know what we should do with him. I suppose we could do the same to him that we did with Meranda. Just not sure if it works on wizards.

I think that maybe David and I should go get the wizard and deal with him, ourselves. Unlike a witch, a wizard is born with their powers. A mortal could be a witch for their whole life and not know that they have the gift. Where a mortal born to be a wizard begins his life with powers. I’ve seen baby wizards that magically get their own nourishment. So please, let us go to Antaysha to get this evil wizard. Our wizard council will deal with him quickly. We can promise you now, Queen Sheila, he won’t ever be able to bother you again. We know this place we could send him, that he would be of no danger to anyone again. Though, we cannot remove a wizard’s magic, we might be able to do as you did, with Meranda. We can cast a spell that would take away his memories of being a wizard.

Thank you both for all your help. I would love to stay here and visit but I have to go back to help the Pegasus. Antaysha and I will await your visit soon. Thank you both for your hospitality and the tea.

She left feeling somewhat relieved, but still not sure if, the wizard could be changed back to a good wizard. She worried about Pegasus Mountain, knowing they would have to find a spell that would keep the wizard out. As she left the village of Arbury, she found a strange arch. It seemed to have a cloud inside the brick doorway. Sheila walked around the back of the arch to see how large it might be inside. She found nothing beyond the arch but ground. She could see the grass path all the way back toward town. There was no sign of an arch between her and town. It looked, as if nothing stood between her and where she had just come from. She walked back toward town, through what she had seen as an arch. When she turned back around, it was there again. Something drew her back to the arch. She reached her hand into the cloud, feeling something magical inside. She quickly pulled her hand back out, feeling contentedness. She looked down at her hand in wonderment. Her entire hand was covered in glitter. Sheila could not understand why, she suddenly felt this contentedness, inside herself. She placed her other hand into the cloud, feeling the contentedness within the cloud. She again, removed her hand to find it covered in glitter.

Sheila felt herself being drawn deeper and deeper into the cloud. She knew that she should back away from the arch. There was no way she could know what magic this arch held. Just about the time she had decided to back out, she was whisked deep into the cloud. She felt all sorts of emotions running through her body. She wasn’t flying with her wings; she was floating on the cloud.

Sheila floated through many clouds, not even knowing which direction she was going. She found herself, finally, sitting on the ground near a large tree. As she looked around her, she could see sparkling glitter just floating. When the glitter touched her, it just seemed to melt away. As she looked up towards the sky, she saw blue skies. It had wisps of clouds floating here and there, with glitter floating throughout it all. The sun gleamed through the clouds, making the glitter sparkle with rainbows. It was the most beautiful sight she had ever seen. It looked like she was looking through a beautiful diamond, seeing rainbows. Sheila decided to look around the area some more, but she soon found that her wings would not let her fly. She had to actually walk from her grassy area. She didn’t get very far when suddenly, she was falling down what looked like a long cliff toward a waterfall. She did all she could do to flap her fairy wings, but they didn’t work at all. She waited for that certain pain that would come from falling from so high up. Instead, she landed on a flat rock that looked like it was all different kinds of jewels that just seemed to glisten in the sunlight. She turned toward the waterfall which was also full of sparkles. Sheila thought that the waterfalls, looked like someone had stacked gems of all shapes and colors. It created a rainbow affect that glistened with sparkling glitter. The air smelled like sweet fruit and flowers. She was in such awe of this most beautiful place. She had no idea where she could possibly be, though she really didn’t feel fear. She felt nothing but happiness and contentedness.

As Sheila turned away from the waterfall, she saw them looking at her. They were Pegasus, covered in glitter from head to tail. They were much smaller than the Pegasus that she was used to seeing. Their eyes seemed to be like diamonds, shining in the sunlight. She had seen these creatures before, yet she couldn’t remember where she had seen them.

Who are you little fairy and why have you come here? I know that you aren’t from here since you did just fall off that cliff over there. By the looks in your eyes, you have never seen our beautiful home.

Sheila knew she could cast a spell to hear their whispers. She just had to wait for them to look away from her for just a moment. Sheila attempted to hear what the girls were whispering to one another. She couldn’t quite make it out. Sheila whispered, "Tera Plu Bee. She could hear them clearly now as they whispered.

Ivy whispered to Priscilla, You shouldn’t have cast that spell on her. She could have gotten hurt falling off the cliff.

Priscilla whispered back at Ivy, Shut up Iva! This way she won’t be trying to use magic. If she thought she could already fly, obviously they fly using magic all the time.

My name is Sheila, she announced to stop their whispering. I am Queen of Crystal Mountain. I am still not sure how I have come to be here. I mean you no harm, we are peaceful fairies. This place? Where is this beautiful mountain, compared to Pegasus Mountain? I’m curious, what sort of creatures are you?

I know of no Crystal Mountain, nor do I know of any Pegasus Mountain. My name is Priscilla, glad to meet you, Sheila. How rude it is of you to call us creatures. We are Glitter Pegasus Fairies. This is Glitter Mountain, which has been here for hundreds of years now. Once, we find out who you are and if you are a danger to us or not, I will take you to the castle. I can sense that you are good-hearted, but there is a mystery about you. We will go to the castle so that they can figure out how you arrived here.

One question, Priscilla. Why can’t I fly here? I am, after all a fairy, who really needs to fly. Would it be possible to give me whatever magic it is that will let me fly? Please.

Priscilla turned into a circle, changing into a beautiful fairy. She raised her wand, casting the spell of flight onto Sheila. Priscilla introduced Sheila to Ivy and Cabrina. Sheila tested her wings with a short hop, making sure that they would work right, though she knew that her magic was just fine now. She didn’t want to fall again; she knew that Priscilla had something to do with her inability to fly. Once she got into the air, she couldn’t believe her eyes. There, just past the tree where she started was the most glistening castle. It was perched high on a hilltop, yet was just barely below the clouds. Rainbows were cascading over the top of the castle, causing the castle to be many colors all at once. Sheila noticed that the castle had the same shape, as the stone arch that she had come through. As they descended toward the entrance of the castle, Sheila noticed that there were many more of these beautiful Glitter Pegasus Fairies.

Priscilla walked up the steps where there were guardians at the entrance. Sheila, please wait here until I tell them that you are here and request an audience. Priscilla walked into what looked like a cloud, disappearing inside the castle. Within minutes, she came back outside with two Pegasus at her side.

I am Marvin, Prince of Glitter Mountain. I understand that you are Queen Sheila, of Crystal Mountain. I am curious how you managed to arrive here on our secluded mountain. Did someone send you here on purpose? Do you remember how you managed to get here?

"Hello Marvin, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I was in a village called, Arbury. I was visiting a couple of wizard friends of mine, to inquire about some trouble on our mountain. As I left the village, I noticed an arch, much like the shape of this castle here. I saw a cloud within the rock formation, but nothing else. I circled the arch and could not see it at all from the back side. I walked back toward the village and turned to see the arch; it was still right there. I went through the cloud, which is how I ended up here. I
