Chapter 1
Man, do I need a fucking vacation! I swear I am being pulled in every single direction of my life and can’t seem to catch my breath for 5 minutes. My son will be having surgery soon, so I’ve been stressed about that along with everything else. Bills, schooling, the kids, the weight of it all falls on me and I can’t seem to catch a damn break these days. I swear if I don’t get a break soon, I’m going to lose my shit.
The universe must have heard me because as soon as I pulled into the Marathon Gas Station, my phone rang. It was Keyonna; one of my close friends for the past 7 years. I picked up,
Hey boo
, she said. What you doing?
Shit stressed the fuck as usual. Why what’s up?
Well hopefully this will cheer you up. You got some money?
I’m thinking she about to ask me for some money. I mean I know she can hold her own, but if she needed something and I had it, she got it too.
I got called to do a video shoot in L.A. You wanna go with me and make some money
HELL YEA! Let me make some calls to see if I can get a sitter for the kids. Ima hit you back in a few to get the details.
Bet! Let me know girl and we outta here!
I hung up and called every number I could in my phone. My usual sitter wanted more than usual to keep them all for more than 3 days. I said to myself damn if you want ya rent paid for the month, just say that. She was way outta pocket with the number she threw at me. I called my back-up and she said she wouldn’t be available. My excitement quickly turned to disappointment because I was having trouble trying to secure a sitter. I had to call Keyonna back and let her know I wouldn’t be able to make the trip. I mean it was last minute, so I knew it was a stretch to get someone to keep them. I called her back,
I’m not going to be able to go. My sitters doing the most trying to charge me an arm and a leg for a couple days out of town.
Hold up girl, let me make a quick call to my cousin Trina. She babysits for a living, so I’m sure she won’t mind making some extra cash and won’t charge you much. In the meantime, just get ya shit together so we can catch this flight.
I knew of her cousin but didn’t know her personally. I know she wouldn’t have me taking my kids to someone who was going to put them in harm’s way. I started to get excited again. I started twerking in the car and thinking I got to get myself some new shit for this trip. I had 4 days to get ready and wanted to do a little shopping before then. I decided since I had a little more time on my hands, I would take a trip over to Nordstrom’s. As soon as I hit the store, my phone started vibrating, I looked down at the message. It was Key, GIRL PACK YO SHIT!
I guess she was able to get her cousin to watch the kids for me. I was souped as hell walking in the mall, I was ready to shop and get away from this madness of a life for a few days. I thought about everything I needed to do over the next couple of days. Getting myself and the kids together; I had to make sure they were straight too, couldn’t just think about myself. So, I made a list of everything I needed to do, so much to take care of but so little time.
It’s the day before the trip and Keyonna and I decided to go to the nail salon to get our nails done. She was going on and on about everything she wanted to do when we got there, all the places she wanted to see and of course the video shoot. You can tell she was just as excited as me, but this is something she was used to doing anyway. Keyonna is no stranger to video shoots, she does them all the time here in Atlanta. She’s done a few in Miami and maybe one or two in L.A. She’s your typical, well-maintained video vixen. Nice body, hair always done, a Louis Vuitton bag for every occasion. I mean, I’ve done a few shoots here and there, but not like her since I have my kids to think about. She can up and go anytime she wants since she has none, but me, I have to turn them down every now and then because I can’t just up and travel and leave my kids at the last minute. My son Deon requires a lot of care, hence the reason for his surgery, so I can’t leave him with just any and everybody. It would be nice if I could leave him with his dad, but he’s not reliable either. Trina is a certified babysitter and Keyonna told me she even works with kids that require a little extra care, so that was a relief to know he would be in great hands while I’m gone.
It was the morning of; the kids and I were all packed and ready to go. I loaded them all in the car along with all the bags. As I headed over to Trina’s house, I gave them all the talk about being on their best behavior and looking out for one another. We got to her house and I hurried up to unpack all their stuff from the car. Gave them all hugs and kisses before standing outside and giving her instructions and contact numbers for me and my emergency contacts. I slid her the money she asked for along with an extra $200 on top of it. She looked at me as if to say this is too much. I gave her a hug and a smile and thanked her before jumping back in my truck and hitting highway 285. Our flight was at 10:15 am so we had to make sure we were at the airport at a reasonable time. I got to Keyonna house and saw her standing outside with her shades, a hoodie and jeans on with her bags laid out on the hood of her car. She told me to park my truck in
