    The Torn Veil

    Anja woke up in the middle of the forest. Birds chirped and mushrooms hummed.

    She had no idea where she was.

    She gingerly touched her head and winced at the large throbbing knob at the back of her head. Pain splintered from it and she nearly passed out.

    At least she knew why her memory was so fuzzy.

    ‘You should leave the forest before nightfall,’ a powder blue rabbit said from where it sat on a fallen tree. ‘It’s Samhain,’ he added when she stared at him in confusion.

    Anja shook her head to clear it.

    ‘Won’t work. Whatever they did to you caused serious damage.’ The rabbit sighed heavily. ‘Come on, I’ll show you the way.’

    Anja stood up. Following a blue, speaking rabbit probably wasn’t the wisest choice, but it was better than staying where she was.

    Green and blue lights skittered through the forest, followed by red and pink.

    ‘It isn’t just me—that is strange, right?’

    ‘What do you remember about Samhain?’ the rabbit asked carefully, hopping over another fallen tree.

    ‘It’s the time when the Veil between realms is at its weakest. There are places where the living can walk through to the realm of the dead. And vice versa.’

    ‘And?’

    ‘And what?’

    The rabbit sighed loudly. ‘Measures had been put in place to make all of that nearly impossible. But something terrible happened a few hours ago. If something isn’t done to repair it, the living
