    Cracked Dreams

    The wagon came to a creaking stop at the T-section where a new road started on Aratani's right. It went on forever, shrouded in darkness and fog.

    'You'd better get off here. I'm not going on that cursed road,' the driver said.

    With a sigh, Aratani jumped down.

    'Remember: they have to see your feathered cap.'

    Nodding, she pulled her hood down. Chills swept her neck and for the first time she wished that she didn't have to keep her hair pinned back.

    'I'll be this way again in a week. If you survive,' he shrugged, 'I'll take you back to town.'

    'Thank you.'

    She kept her leather satchel close, making it disappear in the folds of her cloak, as she watched the wagon disappear down the lane.

    Straightening, she turned to the road she had to travel. The Raven's Road. The cursed road.

    Owls hooted eerily in the trees around her and she wished that she had been able to travel in daylight. But this job had come in mid-morning. And she hadn't been able to refuse: despite its dangers, it would pay enough that she could set up shop somewhere nice – perhaps a meadow? – and have clients come to her.

    Aratani took a deep breath, the long obi belt loosening slightly around her middle, and walked down the road with her head held high. The gold leaves glinted in her hair causing sparkles in the dark trees around her. Cursing, she looked up at the moon. She preferred to keep a hood over her hair when travelling as to not draw attention. But with black feathers being the only protection against the curse of that road, she had to show the ornamental gold woven into her hair, proclaiming her trade.

    Things scurried in the darkness, but she kept her gaze straight ahead. She'd heard stories of people carried off while travelling the Raven's Road and was determined not to
