About this ebook

Unlock the more straightforward side of A Clash of Kings with this concise and insightful summary and analysis!

This engaging summary presents an analysis of A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin, which continues the story that began in A Game of Thrones, the first novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. In this sequel, the Seven Kingdoms are engulfed in a bloody civil war as five different would-be kings vie for the throne. However, these political squabbles are merely a distraction from two far-greater threats rising in the North, where shadowy forces of myth and legend are rising from slumber, and the East, where an exiled queen is nursing three dragon hatchlings and plotting her triumphant return to the land that banished her family. George R. R. Martin’s sprawling epic A Song of Ice and Fire is one of the most popular fantasy series of all time, and has been adapted into the successful television show Game of Thrones.

A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin (Book Analysis) - Bright Summaries

    GEORGE R. R. MARTIN

AMERICAN NOVELIST, SCREENWRITER, AND SHORT STORY AUTHOR

Born in Bayonne, New Jersey in 1948.

    Notable works:

A Song of Ice and Fire (1996-present), fantasy novel series

    Sandkings (1979), novelette

A Song for Lya (1974), novella

Since the early 1970s, George R. R. Martin has written consistently in the fantasy and sci-fi genre, though he truly skyrocketed to fame with his fantasy epic A Song of Ice and Fire, which began in 1996 and has yet to conclude. The series currently spans five novels, with two more planned instalments. Martin is known for bringing a degree of complexity often derided as absent from the fantasy genre to his work, spurning the typical good vs. evil dichotomy in favour of a morally nebulous, historically dense, and entirely unpredictable narrative style.

    Genre: fantasy novel

Reference edition: Martin, G. R. R. (2011) A Clash of Kings. New York: Bantam.

Several men attempt to wrest control of the Seven Kingdoms from the ruling Lannisters: Stannis and Renly Baratheon, Robb Stark, and Balon and Theon Greyjoy. Daenerys Targaryen also attempts to return to the continent of Westeros in pursuit of the same goal with her three dragons. Meanwhile, the lost arts of magic appear to be regaining their strength, and Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch believe the King-Beyond-the-Wall to be amassing forces that may include more than just wildling men and women for a march against the Wall. Sansa and Arya Stark both attempt to return home, but their attempts are continually thwarted by a harsh and roiling reality. And in King’s Landing, Tyrion Lannister bolsters the defences for the storm of armies to come.

    SUMMARY

    PROLOGUE

Maester Cressen, advisor to the newly-crowned King Stannis Baratheon of Dragonstone, deems a red comet passing through the sky to be ominous. Cressen aims to convince Stannis to join forces either with House Stark or with his brother, Renly Baratheon, in order to oppose House Lannister, whom Cressen calls Stannis’ true enemies (p. 16). However, Stannis is unconvinced: he is stubborn by nature, and unimpressed by the young new head of House Stark and self-proclaimed King in the North, Robb Stark; he also deems Renly’s pursuit of the crown to be treasonous. Stannis’ wife, Selyse, impels Stannis to instead kill Renly. Cressen attempts to convince him otherwise, but Selyse wins out.
