    CHAPTER ONE

    BIMPE

I SAW BLOOD ON MY PANTIES.

‘You saw what?" Chioma asked me.

I said I saw blood on my pants and I’m scared. Chi- baby, what does it mean?

Rebecca, a fifteen-year-old girl and the oldest among the three of us replied, Debimpe, it’s only a sign you are a grown-up girl. My mum once told me when I started menstruation that, it is the monthly flow of blood from a woman.

Chioma is of the same age as I am. But she was yet to start her monthly flow. Only Rebecca was experienced as she had started a year before and had been lectured by her mother.

Rebecca was born into a Christian home of five; Mr. and Mrs. Segun and Tinuke Williams, together with her two siblings. Desmond was the eldest in their family. The reason why I said it is serious, is because, if the egg is fertilized by a sperm cell, a girl can get pregnant. Your period can last about 5 days, although, it could be shorter. You can use a pad, tampons-a cotton plug that a girl puts into her vaginal or a menstrual cup. The cup holds the blood until you empty it.

Chioma and I listened with rapt attention.

Some of the changes you might experience include menstrual cramps, changes in sex drive, fatigue, mood swings, breast tenderness, headache or irritability before the onset of your period, Rebecca concluded.

Wow, Nurse Rebe Rebe, thank you for the lecture, Chioma said.

"You’re welcome,’ Rebecca said with some air of pride and joy.

"I can see that your parents really
