Delia's hands burned him, cold as ice, as she set them on his hips. He swallowed nervously. “What are you doing? What do you want?”

“I hunger, Tobias.” Her eyes were wide, her chest rising and falling. Through the narrow band of leather that crossed her chest, Toby could see the twin indentations of Delia’s breasts. “Do you remember, mortal, the day we first met? Have you forgotten that you owe me a favor?”

“No.” Stunned and reeling from his crossing into Faerie, willing to pay any price to avoid being sent back to the mortal world, ecstatic at his healing, Toby had foolishly pledged his word that he owed Delia a favor, unaware that in the Summerlands, Delia had no right to demand favors of him at all.

But once given, his word could not be taken back. Not here, where one’s word was all but sacred. “What do you want?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” She put her hand on his groin, testing. Almost immediately, his manhood sprang roaring to life. Her lips curled in a small, predatory smile. “I want you, mortal.

“We crave it,” she continued in a whisper. She was close now, close enough for him to feel her frigid breath. Her leather-cased hips swung back and forth, teasing his crotch with the feel of her cold, white skin. “We need it. The warmth of life.

“Have you ever wondered, mortal, why?” He groaned as Delia undid the buttons of his breeches. “Why Winter does not attack Summer with all its might? We are colder than they. Crueler. Stronger in war.”

Toby gasped as her fingers wrapped around his erection. “Aurora said something once about...balance.”

“Indeed.” She leaned close, sniffing at his neck. “Oh, I can smell her on you. Skrella. She is a woman who understands. A man’s seed should not be given to one woman. Or a woman’s legs open for only one man.” She reached behind her back, undoing the knot that held her leather wrap closed. Her breasts, Tobie saw through the thundering in his blood, were small but lovely, with pale pink areolae. The right one was pierced by a silver barbell.

“I don’t love you,” he said as she pushed his breeches down. Though he did want her, badly. There was something about the Winter Lady. Something that affected him on a level below reason, below even thought. The mere touch of her fingers on his chest as she reached under his tunic made him want to throw her down on the floor and take her from behind, grinding her body into the stone floor of the shop.

“I don’t want your love,” she whispered. Her palm circled the underside of his rod, rubbing him slowly, maddeningly. “I want you. I want your lovely mortal heat. I want the feeling as you finish inside me, as you feed me.”

“There’s no bed,” he croaked.

The Winter Lady’s frozen-berry lips curled as she shimmied out of her leather breeches. Her mound was hairless, and her body enough to make Toby feel like a dirty old man drooling over high school girls. But her eyes were wise, and he knew that she had enough power to kill him on the spot if she wanted.

“We don’t need one.”

    Chapter 1: Truth and Consequences

The visit to the halflings had not gone well. Though it was possible, if barely, that it might have gone worse.

In fact, thought Aurora, the Summer Lady, without her intervention, her herald, Toby Williams, might well have lost his life through sheer horny ignorance. As it was, she had been able to smooth things over with the halflings. But the demands of diplomacy had taken a more…personal nature than she had expected.

As Aurora and her company walked up the road through the gently rolling countryside, she smiled softly. Half in remembrance, half in amused aggravation with her herald. Though the halflings were a folk who were short in stature, that did not make them any less skilled at lovemaking. The opposite, rather. It was as if they made sure they made up for their lack of size in other ways, concentrating on their partner’s pleasure with a cheerful intensity which was really truly gratifying for the recipient. A night with one of their men would take away any questions a woman might have about her desirability. Even now, almost a full day after crossing the borders of their land, her nethers were quite pleasantly sore.

Small wonder they have so many children.

Which didn’t make her irritation with Toby any less. Her lips thinned in memory at his near-fatal mistake.

Really. If he’s going to pull this sort of crap with everyone we meet, I might as well kill him quietly in his sleep and spare him some pain. Or send him back to the mortal realm where he belongs.

But that, she knew, was no solution at all. There were rules about that sort of thing, Summer reminded her. It had been bad enough when Toby, his body all but consumed by the cancer that was killing him, had stumbled through the portal Aurora had inadvertently torn between Faerie and the mortal realm. Even worse, driven by pity, Aurora had used her power to heal him. And had also, quite accidentally, given him a small measure of her own erotic power. Already a good-looking man when healthy, now he seemed to exude a kind of happy, cheerful sexuality, which drew the eyes of every female around, whether it be pixie, elf-woman, orc, or halfling. To send him back to the mortal world now, with no way to explain how his body had been miraculously healed, would draw unwanted attention to the world of Faerie. Especially since she had no intention of scrambling his memories, as the Winter Lady had suggested.

Aurora sighed sharply. The young man had taken to Faerie with an innocent, puppylike joy. And that only made him more attractive to the women he met. Even Aurora herself. He and the orc-woman Skrella were already lovers. And she strongly suspected that he had taken at least one of her handmaidens to bed as well, if not both. Unfortunately for Toby, what he had read about in fantasy books during his long stays in the hospital didn’t match the truth of what Faerie was actually like. If he didn’t learn to step carefully, he was going to get killed. And the last words out of his mouth were going to be, What did I do?

    I’m sorry, all right?

Aurora jumped, startled. As she had been turning the problem of Toby over in her mind, he had come up alongside her.

She glanced up at the young man. He was about ten years younger than her own thirty. Though Aurora, she reminded herself silently, was now all but immortal, if her grandmother the Summer Queen had been telling the truth. She could appear as she did for as long as she cared to, her body unaging. But Toby was human to the bone, from the top of his head to the tips of his toes.

The pity was how deeply she felt drawn to him, despite his forays into behavior that any other denizen of Faerie would consider almost suicidal. Aside from Delia, the Winter Lady, he was the only person in Faerie who could possibly grasp a corner of what she, herself, had been going through. Up until a few weeks ago, Aurora had thought of herself as completely human. She had a job she enjoyed in the IT department of a financial firm, and if she was single and her body wasn’t attractive, well, she didn’t have any sex drive to speak of anyway, so that was all right.

What she hadn’t been aware of was that she was the grand-daughter of Titania herself, the Summer Queen, ruler of half the lands of Faerie. Nursing some sort of hateful grudge against faerie that Aurora still didn’t understand, her mother Una had hid her away from the instant of her birth, cloaking her body in illusion, powered by the very same sex-drive that she had never experienced in waking life.

At least, not until her grandmother had appeared out of thin air late one night and whisked her away to her realm. Titania had stripped Aurora’s body of the masking illusion that had made her appear to be all but sexless, breaking Una’s spell, and restoring to her what was her birthright. The shock had been incredible, the reality of the joys of sexual pleasure even more so. Since her restoration, Aurora had mated with three different species so far, and was looking forward to quite a lot more.

If you’re not careful, Toby, she said quietly, replying to the young man’s aggrieved apology, you’re going to get me in quite a lot of trouble. And I won’t always be able to talk my way out of it. Or convince the local headman that exchanging his daughter’s innocence for a night in bed with me is a fair trade.

That girl was no innocent, Toby muttered. "She knew what she was doing. And what do you mean, ‘get you in trouble?’ Why should what I do have anything to do with you?"

Aurora stopped in her tracks, turning to face him. Around them, murmurs rose as the rest of the company slowed, listening to their conversation.

I am the Lady of Summer, Herald. She could hear the power in her voice. And this time, she didn’t try to rein it in. Toby needed to hear this, needed to understand that this wasn’t a game, but deadly serious. And any action committed by you reflects on me. Would you have it said that the Summer Lady was so lacking in honor that she allowed her herald to despoil the virginity of a halfling maiden who didn’t know any better?

"Didn’t know any better? Toby’s voice was disbelieving. She was right there, Aurora. With her hand on my crotch and her face only inches away, asking me if it was true about how big humans were."

And did you ask her how old she was? I saw the girl. She looked to be barely out of puberty.

Yes, I did. She said she was nineteen!

And the age of consent for halflings is? She knew the answer, but Aurora let her voice trail off suggestively.

Oh, crap. Toby’s face went white. Don’t tell me.

Thirty-three, Delia said cheerfully from behind him. "Congratulations, Toby! Most humans prefer the elves. They’re so pretty," she said, smirking at Mindorallen, who ignored her. Not many would think of going for a halfling who isn’t even in her tweens. What is it you call it back in the mortal world?

    Statutory rape, Aurora said grimly.

    She wasn’t…I didn’t…

Only because her brother walked around the corner of the barn, from what I hear.

"We didn’t do anything!" The young man looked around the circle for support, and got none. Delia was openly amused. The
