About this ebook

Outsider: A Novel of Suspense (Kate Burkholder, Book 12) by Linda Castillo: Conversation Starters

Outsider: A Novel of Suspense by Linda Castillo tells the story of Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and her startling reunion with a woman from her past.

Amish Widower Adam Lengacher was enjoying a sleigh ride with his children when he discovered a car with an unconscious woman inside it. Burkholder responded to his call for help and was surprised to see her former best friend and police academy buddy, Gina Colorosa.

They had drifted apart through the years and the different choices they made. This unexpected reunion forced Kate to investigate what Gina had been up to and how she ended up with a bullet wound. What Kate found was a life riddled with danger and betrayal that ultimately forced Gina to seek protection.

Gina stayed on Adam’s farm while Kate and State Agent John Tomasetti investigated the events leading to her escape. They did not know that trouble was upon them and their lives were in danger because of Gina. The revelations Kate faced shook her to her very core and made her question Gina as well as the entire police force.

Outsider is a New York Times bestseller. It garnered an impressive 4.09-star rating on Goodreads based on 747 reviews and 4,588 ratings. Kirkus Reviews calls it “pulse-pounding” and “relevant.” Booklist praises it for its representation of the Amish culture and Publishers Weekly predicts that readers will want Kate Burkholder to have a “long career.”

    Introducing Outsider

Outsider: A Novel of Suspense is the twelfth installment in the Kate Burkholder mystery series. The story opened with a prologue recounting a no-knock raid at a female cop’s home. She fled for her life, and the cops fired at her car. The woman’s identity wasn't revealed until Chief of Police Kate Burkholder responded to Amish Widower Adam Lengacher’s discovery of an unconscious woman in a car that crashed during the snowstorm. She didn’t expect that this was how she would be reunited with her police academy best friend, Gina Colorosa. The car was full of bullet holes, and she would have frozen to death if Adam hadn’t taken her back to his farm in Painters Mill and administered first aid. Although he was with his children at the time of the discovery and her car's state was indicative of danger, the instinct to help overcame him.

Gina was apparently headed for Kate to ask for her help when the blizzard caused the crash of her pickup. But Kate wasn't shocked only because of the circumstances in which they found her. The two of them had been best friends in the police academy and spent the early years of their careers together in Columbus. They were like sisters, and Kate loved her to the point of ignoring the first signs of trouble in her behavior. They had a falling out as soon as she discovered that Gina had become a dirty cop. Kate immediately packed up and returned to her Amish roots and
