It’s not hard to see why the locals in a small Australian town called Durton, in dusty western New South Wales, dub it “Dirt Town” in Hayley Scrivenor’s accomplished first thriller. Durton – a fictional but familiar place – is on its last legs. A former wheat transport centre, its economy has waned, its people are poor. Families are buckling under the strain.
