Summer tries to slide off my lap, prompting me to wrap an arm around her waist. Stroking her cheek, I say, "I should spank you for ruining a very expensive wedding." For our nuptials, I spared no expense. I booked the ballroom at the Ritz, ordered a custom-made dress from her favorite designer, got catering from the French restaurant we went to on our first date, and even paid for f**king white doves.
"I'm sorry," she says in a quiet voice.
"Why did you try to run away?" I brace myself for the worst, expecting her to tell me, I don't love you anymore. Because I'm a selfish b**tard, I won't let her go even if she tells me that. I'm too obsessed with her. I'd make her fall in love with me again, no matter what it takes.
"I know what you are, Chris."
I still. "What do you mean?" I ask, masking my inner panic.
"I know you're a crime boss."
