    Introduction

    War and Peace

Most parents look forward to enjoying a happy, peaceful coexistence with their children. Realistically, however, many normal, busy homes are seldom a Utopian paradise. Parents who work long hours to support their families may find themselves too exhausted at the end of the day to make the effort to instill consistent routines and to teach their children good sleep habits. In some instances, these parents resort to taking the easy way out when confronted with their moody, overtired child. This is certainly an enticing option! They either attempt to cajole the child into going to bed by using bribes and when this fails, which it eventually will do, these parents give up the fight and allow their child to stay up later than is good for their well-being. The end result becomes a toss-up between an uneasy peace and outright war where the peace option is seldom victorious.

    Uneasy Truce

Agood sleep routine is as vital for your child’s health and overall well-being as are healthy food and exercise. Chronic sleep loss lays the child open to an almost endless list of problems that would not be experienced if good sleep routines were consistently followed.

First-time parents may not realize the negative impact too little sleep can have on their child’s long-term successful growth and development. The negative aspects of the knock-on effect of sleep deprivation for a child and the devastating consequences this is likely to have for the entire family cannot be underestimated. Imagine NO SLEEP for an endless succession of nights! NO THANK YOU! Going without an occasional good night’s rest is manageable for most adults. When consecutive sleepless nights become the norm, the resulting exhaustion for both parents and their children may lead to a multitude of unpleasant and unnecessary issues. Among these, stress and anxiety rate very high. Stress is ranked as one of the deadliest causes of both physical and mental illnesses. Early indications of children suffering from sleep deprivation may be exhibited by unexpected mood swings resulting in the onset of unusual behavior patterns. In severe cases where children do not enjoy the luxury of a restful night’s sleep, these children may begin to suffer from psychosomatic illnesses and may even begin to self-mutilate or contemplate suicide.

Although adults who suffer from loss of regular, peaceful sleep can continue to cope with their daily lives with some degree of functionality, children need ALL the sleep they can get in order to function at their optimal level. Children between the ages of three and six years who lack consistent, good sleep routines become moody, uncooperative and are just not so pleasant to spend time with. These children
