Toddler Sleep Training - MARIE C. FOSTER

    Introduction:

It is 3:04 a.m., and a working mother is in the middle of her sleep. Earlier in the day, she was caught up with tons of work to finish, errands to do, and bills to pay. Once nighttime came, her body tells her to get some much-needed rest. But before doing so, she helped her toddler fall asleep. After two hours, her child sleeps, and she finally lies down on her bed, completely exhausted, and quickly dozed off. But then, as soon as 3:10 a.m. came, cries from her toddler that sounded louder than a firetruck siren wakes her up from her deep slumber. She hoped that her sleep-deprived days would come to a thankful end, but it hasn't. She feels so stressed and frustrated, deeply longing for the days when her sleep routine would return back to normal. But for now, she only wants her child to sleep so she can return to get some rest before her alarm clock goes off to signal another workday to resume shortly. Her toddler's crying continues.

Does this story resonate with you? If so, you are not alone.

In fact, in a National Sleep Foundation (NSF) poll, it was discovered that more than two out of every three children ages ten and below have gone through some form of sleep issue. It has been established that more than 25% of toddlers who develop unhealthy sleeping patterns keep repeating irregular sleep behaviors over time.

For every child, a regular and sound sleeping cycle is of the utmost importance. For babies to grow into mature, composed adults, they need adequate care through nutrition, physical movement, and a sufficient quality sleep schedule. While the former two factors are easily taken care of by many parents, an irregular sleep cycle is something that most parents struggle to handle and overcome. On average, toddlers need to sleep at least 11 to 14 hours every day.

Typically, a toddler's sleeping schedule is spread over 24 hours. They usually wake up at 7 a.m., take a nap for around 2 hours at 1 p.m., and go back to sleep by 7.30 or 8 p.m. This cycle varies in each toddler, as some prefer to wake up earlier than 7 a.m. Any kind of health or environmental issue can deteriorate their sleep quality and eventually break the cycle.

Unfortunately, toddlers are prone to developing health issues in the short and long run due to irregular sleep cycles. Plus, it is not just the toddler who suffers but also their parents and the entire family. The constant crying, cribbing, and tantrums can cause irritability and make parents feel anxious. Toddlers who cannot sleep through the night run the risk of walking around the house looking for their parents. Additionally, the transition from a crib to a bed provides a sense of freedom, which keeps them alert and disturbs their sleeping cycle.

As children grow, they encounter several changes in their sleeping patterns. While some struggle to settle down in bed, others wake up quite frequently from their sleep, which can disturb their sleep pattern in the long run. Your toddler's sleep quality determines their emotional balance, reactions to their surroundings, grasping power, alertness, mood, attention, resilience, compassion, and learning memory. The age group between 1 to 4 is quite delicate. Toddlers need to sleep and eat well to promote growth and development.

It is necessary to treat these issues early on as your child may face sleeping issues as they grow up. Generally, people need to sleep soundly for 7 to 10 hours to maintain energy levels and be healthy. This habit can be instilled from a young age in children. Since toddlers possess the ability to learn quickly and absorb things at a deeper level, proper sleep training can help you combat this problem and prepare your child for their future.

This book aims to help relieve the pain and frustration from toddler sleep issues so that families will no longer have to deal with nights of stress. My motivation to write a book on sleep training and other books on parenting stems from my deep love for children. Being a parent myself, I share the same struggles other parents face, which is why I have a deep passion for sharing my insights and information to help guide other parents solve their kids' sleep issues. And if you are constantly stressed about your child's health, sleep cycle, and lifestyle, this book is here to help you as well.

If your toddler is constantly grumpy, displaying signs of tiredness, and easily becomes irritated, it is time to turn things around. Make a significant change, not just in their lifestyle but also in yours. The key is to spot the signs and tracing the patterns behind their tiredness. In a way, ciphering the signs can also help you dig deeper and extract the root cause of the issue, which can, in some cases, be serious. With this plan in place, you can also examine your child's health and diagnose underlying issues, which can otherwise be impossible to determine.

This book will help your child sleep better, which will also enhance the quality of your life. In turn, the practices mentioned in this book will transform your home into a place of peace, contentment, and productive family life. Moreover, you will successfully reduce your stress levels and finally get the me time you have desperately wanted to experience. If sleep problems are left untreated, you may increase your child's risk of facing recurring health issues as they grow up, some of which may be irreversible. As you will soon learning in this book, fixing your child's sleep schedule can provide several health benefits that you should consider right away.

While turning off electronics and taking a shower before bed are some common strategies to induce proper sleep-in toddlers, many fail to analyze the issue in depth. Tackling the inner causes of sleep issues is also what this book is about. You might think that you know your toddler inside out, but this may not necessarily be the case due to their sleeping habits and preferences. Instead of ignoring the issue or trying common home remedies, widen your perspective and consider other hidden factors as well.

Note that most of the strategies you are about to read need time and patience to work. However, it is high time you begin addressing sleep problems and working on adjusting your child's schedule as they grow up fast. The sooner you begin, the more successful and quicker outcomes you can expect.

Whether you are a busy parent with a tight schedule and little time on your hands or a stay-at-home parent who feels anxious all the time, this book will walk you through some effective tips to train your toddler to sleep better successfully. The following chapters are structured using step-by-step techniques and practical tips on toddler sleep training, which will enhance your quality of life and train your toddler to handle issues with ease. Some of the chapters also include some rarely discussed or hidden tips and tricks to treat the issue effectively.

I hope that this book helps struggling parents surmount the recurring shortcomings caused due to their toddler's irregular sleep cycle.

    Let's begin.

    Chapter 1: Sleep Essentials

During sleep, our bodies rest and recharge their energy sources to take on new challenges the next day and stay healthy for a long period. Sleep is also essential for healthy brain function, as the lack of it causes a decline in our mental capabilities. Our ability to process memories, focus on data and have a rational thinking process is affected by the amount of sleep we get. The need for sleep in a human body is determined by the circadian rhythm, an internal 24-hour body clock. This clock regulates not only our sleep cycles but many other functions in the body as well. Our body's energy sources are depleted throughout the day, and when they are close to dangerously low levels, our body will signal to us that it's time to rest.

Besides your energy levels, the amount of
