Chapter One

Vanessa stretched her arms and slowly lifted her hands to her face. She rubbed her dark brown eyes to clear them as she blinked awake and took in her unfamiliar surroundings.  She was not in the luxurious condo apartment that she shared with her boyfriend in Manhattan, although the wallpaper and curtains were lavishly beautiful. The view outside the window of the high Sierra Nevada Mountains reminded her that she and Carter were in a luxury hotel suite in Reno, Nevada where they had eloped just the night before.

Vanessa let her gaze fall upon her hand, where a glittering gold wedding band contrasted beautifully against her dark brown skin, and her lips curved into a smile of contentment and love.  She was no longer Vanessa Imenerse, but Mrs. Carter Davis; a title she never would have imagined for herself when she met him not so very long ago, but one she was proud and honored to hold.  She was no longer alone in the world; she finally had someone she could call family and it felt even better than she had dreamed it would. 

Carter had given up everything for her, eloping with her into the night despite the scandalous sex tape of her that was certain to ruin her career as CEO. His parents and the board of directors at Gainscorp had told him to abandon her to protect his reputation and his career, but he had refused and flown with her to Reno to escape the media frenzy.  It had been his idea to get married there, and Vanessa had happily accepted his proposal and his ring.  It was funny, she had always prided herself on being an independent career woman who didn’t need a man to make her whole, and now there was nothing that filled her with more happiness than being able to call herself Carter’s wife.

"Good morning, Mrs. Davis.  I see you’re finally awake," Carter said in his soft deep voice, emphasizing her new name with a twinkle in his eye.  They kissed tenderly before settling back against their pillows, snuggling against each other as he took her hand into his own.  An identical gold band glittered against the tan skin of the ring finger of his left hand, and they both admired how perfectly their fingers intertwined, dark and light melding together as one.

"Good morning, Mr. Davis," she smiled back at him, looking deep into his blue eyes and caressing the blond hair that had fallen boyishly across his forehead. He leaned his face towards hers and they kissed again, gently at first, then more firmly, as their arms encircled each other and their passions flared.
