About this ebook

A 24-day advent devotional inspired by reflections on home, hope, and hospitality. For early Christians, Advent was without the trappings of modern-day commercialism. There was great celebration of the Savior born to us, and expectation of His soon return as risen King. Today we find ourselves yet in the middle…reaching backward to revere Him, and forward to receive Him. He is our Guest of Honor, and we are His eternal guests, invited into the Kingdom of His Father. Within this, a theme emerges—an invitation to Christ-like hospitality, near and dear to the heart of God, and there we want to focus this Christmas. In this devotional, for each day's theme you will find a brief essay, four focus questions for journalling, scripture for meditation, a song recommendation, and encouragement to share your own thoughts on Home, Hope and Hospitality.

    About the Author

    Introduction

Despite being raised in the Christian church, the concept of Advent was foreign to me until recently. Yet, Christmas has always brought with it that childlike anticipation of something—or someone—arriving (adventus), something to get excited about: whether it be a special day, a magical experience, an influx of visitors, or gifts, or food, a time of peace and goodwill...

For the believers in early centuries, Advent was without the trappings of modern-day commercialism. There was great celebration of the Savior born to us—the incarnation of a Messiah, and with equal gravitas, the expectation of His soon return—the King of the world.

...reaching backward to revere Him, and forward to receive Him…

We find ourselves yet in the middle…reaching backward to revere Him, and forward to receive Him. He is our Guest of Honor, heralded with great eagerness: Oh come, Lord Jesus, come! And we are His eternal guests, invited into the Kingdom of His Father. Within this a theme emerges—a holy invitation to hospitality, near and dear to the heart of God, and here we want to focus for 24 days of Advent.

I realize that depending on the year you are reading this, the Advent period may be longer or shorter than the span of this devotional. I encourage you to take what you’ve read and make the other days ones of intentional prayer and practice.

Come along with me as I share thoughts of Home, Hope and Hospitality, of gifts that keep on giving, on receiving Him—and each other—with hospitality...as He teaches us to do.

    Day One

    The Extravagant Giver

A dear family member sent me an article about snowflakes. Her caption was a question: ‘Why is God so extra?’ I smiled, knowing exactly what she was talking about. The article explained how every single snowflake is absolute unmatched perfection—tiny designs made of ice that are so individually unique, so detailed, and so spectacular.

There are blooms men will never behold, species still sacred, cosmos unreached, revelations to be discovered, wonders without words attached to them.

I asked if she’d ever watched a rainforest documentary, or if she realizes how many species of bacteria exist on a dog’s tongue. There are blooms men will never behold, species still
