    Chapter 1: My Truth

College is a stomping ground to pound the pavement to discover you. Everyone may not go to college but everyone must get an education. There are other forms of gathering knowledge and setting yourself up to reach your goals. I can’t even begin to tell you what to do or how I made it this far until I tell you my story.

How often is it that one defies the odds of making it out of the ghetto and becoming successful? The odds are against us. My experience growing up started in my house long before I hit the streets. Understanding my parents struggle made things easier for me to understand once I became an adult myself. Learning that everyone has their demons they must fight on a daily basis, opened up the door for drama and questions. I am the baby girl of four children: two older sisters and one younger brother. My sisters have different mothers; very typical in the black community with our men not being pushed to be held responsible for their actions. My mother was the lucky one that got the ring. Growing up, I didn’t know much and was completely oblivious to the truths around me. My daddy lived the life of a player, a free man, a Casanova, a ladies man.

When I was five years old, I experienced something no child should ever have
