This book is based on a true story…told to
author by her grandma, Ethel Burgess-Nalley.
Intro…
All my life I have understood to appreciate
what I have…and not focus on ‘what I don’t have’. This mindset is largely due to the stories of my grandma. She also made me see that Christmas is a time to celebrate the ‘Birth of Jesus Christ’, and our families should be celebrating our ‘gatherings’, not ‘gifts’. She taught me to focus
on what I have that ‘others’ do not—not on what
I ‘lack’.
Grandma was an amazing survivor. My only
regret is that I did not have the story of her entire life…just those two, hard years surrounding the illness and death of her Mama.

Chapter 1:
The Passing
I could not believe this was happening to me. I felt as if it were a dream. I heard all the cries around me—but somehow I could not weep.
This year of 1895, I, Ethel Burgess, 11 years old, was attending my mother’s funeral.
The church was packed. Mother’s friends and family were many. It was in January. A fresh layer of snow had just fallen. But no one seemed to feel the cold chill.
On the hard, homemade wooden bench of Old Hopewell Church in Milton County, Georgia, I sat with brother Frank (who was 5), sister Lydia (9), and sister Ema (7). Grandpa Bagwell held my baby brother, Roy, who was about 4 months old.
I watched Papa as the tears streamed down his face…and then…I cried. Papa loved Mama. It seemed even harder for him since Mama was only 29 years old.
I watched Grandma and Grandpa Bagwell and wondered how they must feel, seeing their daughter lying there.
As I watched and thought, I realized why Mama had taken so much time to teach me everything a mother does…cause, now I’m the mother…and have been for over two years, ever since Mama got sick.
Oh, how I wish I had not been so busy. How I wish I could have talked with Mama more. How I wish I would have taken more time to show her how much I loved her.

They are opening the casket now. All those feet on that hard wooden floor sound like a slowed-down train, passing through a train station.
I just closed my eyes and remembered
